, Fla. ? The Georgetown baseball team advanced to the championship game of the Rollins College Baseball Week Saturday, after splitting a day-night doubleheader in which they defeated Penn, 9-5, but fell to host Rollins by a score of 4-2.
The Hoyas have posted a 4-2 record at the College Baseball Week, and have improved their overall season record to 13-8.
In Saturday?s day game, Penn put up three runs in the seventh to pull within two, but Georgetown came back with two runs in the eighth as the Hoyas held on for a 9-5 victory.
Ron Cano (El Segundo, Calif./ El Segundo) was 2-for-3 with a pair of runs batted in and Andrew Cleary (Weston, Mass./ Belmont Hill) knocked in three runs to lead the Hoyas? offense. Parker Brooks (Las Vegas, Nev./ Bishop Gorman) and Jim Supple (Summit, N.J./ St. Peter's Prep) each added two hits and a run scored for the Hoyas. Travis Danysh (San Antonio, Texas/ Alamo Heights) scattered six hits and five earned runs in six and a third innings to pick up the victory on the hill.
Mike Goldblatt was 3-for-4 with two RBI to highlight the Quakers (3-7) at the plate. Josiah Brand also had a big day, going 2-for-5 with a pair of RBI. Josh Appell gave up ten hits and six earned runs in six and a third innings in the loss.
Brand doubled down the right field line and was brought home with a Goldblatt single to left in the Penn first to put the Quakers up 1-0. Georgetown then came back with a Cano RBI double in the second. The Hoyas then put up three runs in the third on a Cleary bases-clearing double to go up 4-1.
Georgetown tacked on another in the fourth on a Brooks RBI single to right that scored Derek deGrijs (Nashville, Tenn./ BC Goodpasture Christian). Penn manufactured a run in the fifth when Matt Horn took a trip around the bases to make the score 5-2. Cano got Georgetown back on track in the sixth with another RBI double, followed by a deGrijs sac fly that put the Hoyas on top 7-2.
Penn battled back with a three-spot in the seventh with a pair of RBI from Josiah Brand and one from Goldblatt to pull to within two, 7-5. The Hoyas then put the game away in the eighth with two runs to seal up the 9-5 victory.
In the night game, Rollins and Georgetown committed a combined seven errors, but the Tars (22-3) were able to send more men across the plate to record a 4-2 victory over the Hoyas.
Gene Howard did it all for the Tars, going 2-for-4 at the plate with a pair of RBI and also throwing a hitless ninth inning to pick up the save. Mike Crane also knocked out two hits and recorded an RBI for the Tars. Derek Rice picked up the win for Rollins, throwing six and two thirds innings and not allowing an earned run on five hits while striking out six.
Michael Lombardi (Brookhaven Hamlet, N.Y./ St. Anthony's) belted a pair of singles to lead the Georgetown bats with Drew Dargen (Edmond, Okla./ Edmond North) and Timmy Jones (Ledgewood, N.J./ Morristown) each knocking in a run. Erick Chandler (Somerset, N.J./ Rutgers Prep) suffered the loss, surrendering seven hits and three earned runs in six and a third innings of work.
Parker Brooks led off the game for Georgetown by reaching on an error, then was brought in with a Jones single to right to put the Hoyas up 1-0 in the first. Rollins took advantage of two Georgetown miscues in their half of the inning as Howard batted in Toby Rice and Tito Alfonso to put Rollins up 2-1. The Tars put up two more in the fifth when a Ron Baptiste triple brought Rice across the plate to make the score 4-1. Georgetown came back with a run in the seventh, but Rollins was able to hold on for the two-run win.
The Tars and Hoyas will match-up again on Sunday, March 14, in the championship game of the 57th Annual Rollins College Baseball Week. The first pitch is set for 3:00 p.m.
