WASHINGTON, D.C. -- The Georgetown University men?s lacrosse team (4-1) weathered a second half rally by the Hobart College Statesmen (2-3) by scoring two late goals and taking a 9-7 win on Saturday in front of 1,684 fans at Harbin Field. For Georgetown Head Coach Dave Urick and the Hoyas it marked the ninth straight victory over Coach Urick?s former team.
After leading throughout most of the first three periods, the Hoyas found themselves tied 7-7 midway through the fourth quarter as a result of three straight Hobart goals. After tying the game, Hobart won the ensuing face-off and Hobart?s top scorer Mark Williamson fired a shot past Georgetown goalie Rich D?Andrea (Belle Mead, N.J./The Peddie School), but it hit the post and allowed Georgetown to take possession of the ball. On the ensuing possession, Nick Miaritis (Jr., Setauket, N.Y./ Ward Melville) found fellow middie Walid Hajj (Sr., Baltimore, Md./McDonogh) for the tie breaking goal. Less than two minutes later, Hajj returned the favor, feeding the ball to Miaritis for an insurance goal.
Hobart had a few more scoring opportunities, but they were unable to find the net, due largely to excellent goaltending in the clutch by D?Andrea and impressive close defense from Andrew Braziel (Cape Elizabeth, Maine/Cape Elizabeth) and two-time ECAC Player of the Week Brodie Merrill (Orangeville, Ontario/Salisbury School (Conn.)).
Offensively, Miaritis, who had two goals and three assists, and Hajj, who had three goals and one assist, led the Hoyas. Senior attackman Neal Goldman (Ellicott City, Md./Mount Hebron) added two goals and one assist for the Hoyas. Face-off specialist Andy Corno (Jr., Bethesda, Md./Walt Whitman) won the face-off battle against an especially tough John Soden 12-8, and picked up six groundballs to add to his team-leading total of 42.
The Hoyas travel to #5 Duke next week on Saturday, March 27th for a 1 p.m. showdown. The Hoyas return home to face Navy the following Saturday. April 3rd, at 1 p.m. on Harbin Field.
