BALTIMORE, MD ? Georgetown took 17 shots in the first period and built an early 9-3 lead on #19 Loyola at Geppi-Aikens Field on Saturday afternoon. The Greyhounds responded with a fervent rally that brought them within two goals, but the Hoyas held on to win 14-10 behind four goals from sophomore Sean Denihan (Manhasset, N.Y./ Manhasset).
Loyola senior Stephen Brundage registered a career-high four assists while also scoring a goal for the ?Hounds. It was freshman Andrew Spack, however, who kept Loyola close in the game?s early stages, scoring the first two Greyhound goals. Junior Matt Monfett scored the third, but after Georgetown?s second three-goal run of the game, the Hoyas led 9-3.
The Greyhounds maintained the momentum they gained as the first half ended with freshman Greg Leonard scoring back-to-back goals to start the second half. Both goals were unassisted and after facing a six-goal deficit in the first half, Loyola now trailed 9-7.
After the Hoyas answered with a goal from Nick Miaritis (Jr., Setauket, N.Y./ Ward Melville), the Greyhounds converted on their second extra-man opportunity of the day. The Hoyas posted two more goals, one from Keith Schroeder (Summit, N.J./Summit) and an empty-netter from Denihan before Loyola closed the scoring with 16 seconds remaining.
Joining Denihan in the multiple goal column for Georgetown was Miaritis with three and Walid Hajj (Baltimore, Md./McDonogh) with two. Neal Goldman (Ellicott City, Md./Mount Hebron) also added three assists and a score to the GU cause. Leonard, Spack and Georgalas all finished with two goals for the Greyhounds. Georgetown won the ground ball and face-off battles, picking up 46 ground balls to Loyola?s 42. The Hoyas also won 15-of-26 face-offs behind the return of Andy Corno (Bethesda, Md./Walt Whitman).
Sophomore Michael Fretwell got the start in goal for Loyola, making 13 saves while facing 43 shots and GU?s Rich D?Andrea (Belle Mead, N.J./ The Peddie School) allowed 10 goals and registered eight saves. The Greyhounds fall to 3-5 on the year, Georgetown improves to 7-2.
The Hoyas return home next weekend to face UMass at 1 p.m. Saturday, April 24, at Harbin Field.
