Behind a terrific offensive performance, in which the Georgetown baseball team tied a team record with seven doubles, the Hoyas defeated Coppin State on Tuesday night at Shirley Povich Field by a score of 15-7. The win brings the Hoyas' record to 21-23 (5-11 in BIG EAST) and drops Coppin State to 13-27 on the season.
The Hoyas had an offensive explosion in the contest, registering 20 hits, with two players getting five hits apiece. The team got off to an early start, scoring eight runs on nine hits in three innings, off of Coppin State pitcher Bryan Crossley. Hoya starter Warren Sizemore (Hamilton, Ohio/ Ross) recorded the win, pitching for seven innings and giving up five runs and seven hits. He also had seven strikeouts and four walks on the day. Tyler Abbott (Shoreline, Wash./ Shorewood) pitched the final two innings of relief for the Hoyas to preserve the win.
Billy Quinn (Alta Loma, Calif./Alta Loma) led the offense, hitting 5-for-6 on the day, with five runs batted-in, two homeruns and two doubles. Teammate Parker Brooks (Las Vegas, Nev./ Bishop Gorman) followed pace, going 5-for-6 with three RBI. The five-hit performances both tie a team record for most hits in a game, originally set on April 9, 1991 by Rick Fiscina. Andrew Cleary (Weston, Mass./ Belmont Hill) sent one out of the park for the Hoyas, his team-leading seventh of the season, which moves him into a tie for third in the conference in that category.
The Hoyas travel to the University of Pittsburgh on Friday for the first of two games against the Panthers, before heading home for a Sunday doubleheader against West Virginia.
