The Scoop
Georgetown and UMass will play each other for just the fifth time. Today is senior day for Georgetown as nine student-athletes will be honored for their four seasons of dedication to Georgetown lacrosse. The previous four games between GTown and UMass have produced a heated rivalry as all four have been tight affairs and been a determining factor in which team was crowned ECAC Champion. The series is knotted at 2-2 with UMass on a two-game winning streak. In the preseason poll UMass was selected to win the conference while Georgetown was selected second. Both teams are currently 1-0 in league play.
The Hoya offense has come alive with a 13 goal outing against Vermont and a 14 goal game at Loyola. In Georgetown?s win at Loyola sophomore Sean Denihan and junior Nick Miaritis carried the scoring load, netting half of the scores. Georgetown?s defense has continued to be impressive, limiting the opponent to 7.56 goals per game. Face-off man Andy Corno and LSM Brodie Merrill have been keeping the ball in GU?s possession as both rank in the nation?s top five for ground balls with 8.13 -2nd and 7.0 - 4th, respectively.
UMass has been hit with the injury bug and enter today?s game after a double overtime loss to Yale (9-8). Prior to the Yale loss the Minutemen ripped off four straight wins. Five Minutemen have netted over 12 goals, led by Chris Doyle?s 21.
YOU SHOULD KNOW...
Georgetown has won three ECAC Lacrosse League Championships in the league?s four-year existence. This is the first season that an automatic NCAA bid will not be awarded to the ECAC Champion due to the league not meeting the required minimum amount of teams.
