WASHINGTON, D.C. - Georgetown University women?s basketball student-athlete Rebekkah Brunson (Oxon Hill, Md. /Oxon Hill) will be attending the Sacramento Monarchs training camp this weekend, April 24-25, to begin preparation for the upcoming 2004 WNBA season. Brunson was selected as the 10th overall pick last weekend in the WNBA Draft and is the first Hoya to ever be selected in the first round.
?I play with a lot of intensity,? said Brunson, Georgetown?s all-time leader in rebounds and a 2004 All-American, to the Washington Post on April 17th. ?I?m a great rebounder, I?m athletic, and I give everything I have to enable my team to win?I may not be a superstar initially, but if you teach me the right things, I could become that franchise player.?
Brunson will be striving for a position on the Monarchs, who finished third in the Western Conference with a record of 19-15. The Monarchs made it to the Western Conference finals, before losing to the Los Angeles Sparks, 2-1 in the best of three series. The Monarchs made it into the finals after ousting the Houston Comets, 2-1, in first round play.
Brunson comments on her new team, ?Kara Lawson is great. She?s a great guard. I think that the team has so many great players, I?ll just be able to learn as much as possible my first year and hopefully later on make an impact.? Brunson also discussed her new role in the small forward position, ?I think I?m kind of small to be in the post. So I think I?ll become a three in this league.?
?Becky?s efforts both on and off the court will ensure that she succeeds at the next level,? stated Georgetown Head Coach Patrick Knapp. ?Becky is so athletic I think the Monarchs will be very elated with their selection after this weekend?s training camp.?
The Monarchs will play three preseason games against Minnesota, Phoenix, and Seattle, early in May to warm up for the long season ahead, which sees a stoppage in play for the month of August for the 2004 Summer Olympics. The Monarchs begin regular season play on May 20th at Phoenix, and have their home opener on May 22nd against Minnesota. Brunson will return to the Washington area to take on the Washington Mystics on Tuesday, September 7th.
