WASHINGTON, D.C. -- For two straight years, the Georgetown University men?s lacrosse team has stepped onto the field as a favorite vs. UMass, only to be defeated by quick starts by the aptly named Minutemen. When UMass jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first six minutes of the game, the sense of urgency became very apparent for Georgetown. The Hoyas responded with four consecutive goals in the remainder of the first period, and never relinquished the lead, holding on for a 12-10 win.
The Hoyas were able to weather several UMass surges, most noticeably at the ends of the third and fourth periods. The Minutemen made a 2-0 run late in the third, but a third goal that would have put them within one was negated by an illegal equipment (deep pocket) penalty. Not only was the goal negated, but also the one-minute penalty allowed the Hoyas to add another tally, extending the lead to three and killing UMass? run.
Down two goals, 12-10, the Minutemen made one stand at the end of the game, trying to capitalize on a 1:00 slashing penalty by Reyn Garnett (So., Mt. Kisco, N.Y./ Deerfield Academy). UMass? furious final two possessions were thwarted by the clutch goaltending of Georgetown?s Rich D?Andrea (Jr., Belle Mead, N.J./ The Peddie School). With 1:36 remaining, D?Andrea made an acrobatic kick save on a nearly point-blank shot by UMass? Kevin Glenz. On the following possession, D?Andrea sprawled out to make a diving cover of Ryan Connelly?s wide shot, giving Georgetown the ball and the win.
The Hoyas once again featured a balanced offense, with nine players scoring goals. Walid Hajj (Sr., Baltimore, Md./McDonogh) led the team in scoring with three, and Neal Goldman (Sr., Ellicott City, Md./ Mount Hebron) led the team in assists with three. Hoya face-off specialist Andy Corno (Jr., Bethesda, Md./ Walt Whitman) returned to full time duty this week, winning 18-of-26 face-offs, scoring a goal and picking up five groundballs. The Minutemen were led by Kevin Glenz and Sean Morris who had four goals and four assists respectively.
The Hoyas are back in action on Wednesday, April 28th at 4 p.m. vs. Mount St. Mary?s on Harbin Field.
