4/25/2004

STORRS, CT ? After a quick start from the University of Connecticut (7-9; 2-4 BIG EAST) women?s lacrosse team, the Huskies could not hold on as No. 3 nationally-ranked Georgetown (10-3) went on to take the 14-9 victory on Senior Day at Morrone Stadium in Storrs.  With a 6-0 league record, the Hoyas remain undefeated in BIG EAST play after four seasons.

Senior midfielder Gloria Lozano (Sr., Pittsburgh, Pa./Sewickley) posted a career-high four goals on the afternoon, while Anouk Peters (Sr., Ipswich, Mass./Millbrook School) added a hat trick to the Hoya totals.

The Huskies jumped out to a quick 4-1 lead in the first 10-minutes of play. The charge was led by Tracy Mullaney?s two goals and one apiece from Shannon Burke and Kariane Lauri.

Georgetown then went on to score the next five goals taking the 6-4 lead with eight-minutes remaining in the half. Lauryn Bernier (Jr., Strafford, Pa./Conestoga) and Sarah Oliphant (Jr., Annapolis, Md./Annapolis) scored two goals each in the run. Mullaney scored a free position shot, the team?s fourth of the game, to bring the Huskies within one at 6-5. Again, the Hoyas scored on a shot from Lozano and UConn responded with a goal from Dana Stewart. Coca Stanwick (Fr., Baltimore, Md./Notre Dame Prep) raised the Hoyas lead by two at 28:24 and then with no time left on the clock, Anouk Peters had a last minute rally and gave the Hoyas the 9-6 lead at halftime.

Again, in the second half, UConn found the back of the net first on a goal from Mullaney just under four-minutes in. Georgetown scored the next four goals in less than a 10-minute time span on three from Lozano to seal the win. UConn added two more tallies late in the half on shots from Lauri and Tanya Kotowicz.

UConn?s Jennifer Wong made 12 saves in net for the Huskies on 37 GU shots. Sarah Robinson (Jr., Great Falls, Va./St. Mark?s School) played the majority of time in net making four stops and Margaret Farland (Fr., Chapel Hill, N.C./St. Andrew?s School) saw seven-minutes between the pipes for three saves in goal.

The Hoyas have two regular season games remaining.  Georgetown will travel to Harrisonburg, Va., on Tuesday, April 27, for a 4:00 p.m. game against the Dukes of James Madison.  The Hoyas then host Stanford on Saturday, May 1, at 1:00 p.m. on North Kehoe Field.
