BETHESDA, Md. ? A heavy rainstorm in the middle of the seventh inning prompted the postponement of the Georgetown versus Villanova baseball game. The game will be resumed on Monday at 11:30 a.m., before the teams' previously scheduled doubleheader.
The contest was tied 6-6 heading into the bottom of the seventh before the rain started to fall. Villanova scored a run in the top of the seventh to tie the game.
Georgetown took an early lead in the game when they put three runs on the board in the bottom of the first on four hits and an error. Jim Supple (Summit, N.J./ St. Peter?s Prep) singled to center field, and later scored on a single to right field by Michael Lombardi (Brookhaven Hamlet, N.Y./ St. Anthony's). Andrew Cleary (Weston, Mass./ Belmont Hill) doubled down the left field line to score Lombardi, and Cleary stole third and scored on a passed ball for the third Hoya run.
Villanova struck back in the second and third innings with five runs of their own, including an Adrian Schau two-run homer in the second, and three runs off four hits and an error in the third.
Georgetown responded in the bottom of the fourth by posting three runs in a two-out rally. With nobody on base and two outs, Danny Gronski (Sammamish, Wash./ Skyline) sparked the offense with a trailing liner to first that escaped the reach of Villanova first baseman Adrian Shau for a single. Gronski advanced to second on a base hit up the middle by Parker Brooks (Las Vegas, Nev./ Bishop Gorman), and later scored on a double by Jim Supple (Summit, N.J./ St. Peter?s Prep). Designated hitter Billy Quinn (Alta Loma, Calif./ Alta Loma) hit a two-RBI single up the middle to put the Hoyas up 6-5. Lombardi singled, the fifth consecutive hit of the inning for the Hoyas, and Cleary reached on a walk to load the bases. The Hoyas didn't do any more damage, however, as Villanova starter Nick Allen escaped the inning by inducing an inning-ending groundout.
Allen and Georgetown starter Warren Sizemore (Hamilton, Ohio/ Ross) held each team scoreless over the next two innings, before Villanova tied the game at 6 in the top of the seventh inning. Kris Malloy began the inning with an infield single, and advanced on a single down the left field line by Angelo Petracca, which prompted Georgetown to go to the bullpen. Danny Poydenis singled through the left side of the infield to load the bases, and Brian Newbold hit into a fielder's choice groundout to third to bring the tying run across the plate. Reliever Erick Chandler (Somerset, N.J./ Rutgers Prep) retired the next two batters to end the inning, and the umpires called for a rain delay as the Wildcats took the field for warm-ups with reliever Mike Grondecki on the mound.
The unusual scheduling of the series was done to accommodate Villanova University's graduation this weekend. Several Wildcat seniors will travel home to Philadelphia for their graduation ceremony on Sunday before heading back to Washington, D.C. for the completion of today's game and the subsequent doubleheader.
