WASHINGTON, D.C. -- The fifth ranked Georgetown University men?s lacrosse team (10-3) surrendered six of the last seven goals of the game after leading late in the third period to fall to #4 Syracuse (11-2) by a score of 13-9. Georgetown has now lost the last seven straight to rival school Syracuse.
Both teams played extremely well early, and Georgetown took a 6-5 lead into the break at halftime. The teams traded goals throughout the third quarter and Georgetown found itself maintaining a one-goal lead with less than four minutes remaining in the period. However, the tide quickly changed as Syracuse scored three extra man goals. Georgetown responded with an unassisted goal by Nick Miaritis (Setauket, N.Y./Ward Melville), but Georgetown would never tie it, as the Orangemen added another goal just one minute later. The Orangemen added two late goals to seal the victory.
The Hoyas? inability to make a run in the fourth quarter was due largely to the outstanding goaltending of Syracuse?s Jay Pfeifer. Pfeifer made 19 saves on the day, including seven in the final period. Two of Pfeifer?s second half saves were also on Georgetown breakaways, when he was one-on-one with the shooter.
The Hoyas were also hurt by penalties throughout the game. Although both teams had six extra man opportunities, Georgetown scored only once, while Syracuse scored four times.
Georgetown?s offensive production came from a variety of sources. Georgetown?s primary weapons on the day were Trevor Casey (Bethesda, Md./Georgetown Prep), who led the team in scoring with three goals, Sean Denihan (Manhasset, N.Y./Manhasset), with two goals and an assist, Miaritis with two goals, and Neal Goldman (Ellicott City, Md./Mount Hebron) with a goal and an assist.
The Orangemen were led in scoring by Brian Crocket with four goals. The overall star of the day for the Orangemen, however, was Mike Powell, who became Syracuse?s all-time points leader with three goals and three assists on the day.
Although Georgetown was the more aggressive team, leading in shots (51-36), and groundballs (47-27), Syracuse capitalized on 67% of their EMOs, and saved 68% of Georgetown?s shots. The one area where Georgetown did dominate was in face-offs, where GU specialist Andy Corno (Bethesda, Md./Walt Whitman) faced a committee of Syracuse players at the ?X?, and won 18 of his 24 tries.
Today?s game was the last of the regular season for both teams and both await the NCAA Selection Show this Monday, May 10th, between 3 and 4 p.m. on ESPNews.
