BOX SCORE
WASHINGTON, D.C. ? Georgetown Women?s Soccer (1-0-0) opened its 2004 season with a 7-1 victory over visiting Howard (0-1-0), giving Head Coach Dave Nolan his first career head coaching win.
The scoring started early as freshman Sara Jordan (Indianapolis, Ind./North Central) had her first career goal six minutes into the game off an assist by junior Shara McNeill (Avon, Conn./Avon). The Hoyas kept the pressure on and senior Casey McCann (Mendham, N.J./Mendham) added another goal off assists by McNeill and freshman Laura Boova (Summit, N.J./The Pingry School) to go up 2-0. Howard junior Michelle Williston scored with 12 minutes remaining in the half to cut into GU?s lead. Williston had one more look to score at the end of the half, with a one on one against freshman Jade Higgins (Island Park, N.Y./West Hempstead), but Higgins came up with the save. Both sides continued to battle back and forth and ended the half with GU leading 2-1.
The second half got off to a quick start, with Georgetown looking to increase its lead and Howard looking to battle back from the one goal deficit. The Hoyas were goal hungry, as McNeill scored her first goal of 2004 off an assist by Jordan. After nineteen minutes of no scoring and very physical play, senior captain Nicole DePalma (Theills, N.Y./North Rockland) was fouled and the Hoyas received a penalty kick. With the Howard goalie diving to the right, DePalma snuck it in low and close to the post. Two minutes later McCann scored her second goal of the game to increase the Hoyas lead to 5-1.
Later in the second half sophomore Cristina Araps (Belle Meade, N.J./Montgomery) beat the Howard goalie and scored her first goal of the season with 10 minutes remaining in the half. DePalma scored her second goal of the game, beating the Howard goalie and scoring the final goal of the game with 1:15 remaining in the game.
Georgetown next will face Bucknell in Lewisburg, Pa. on Tuesday, August 31, at 4 p.m.
