WASHINGTON, D.C. ? The Georgetown University football team has been picked to finish sixth in the Patriot League for the 2004 season. The Hoyas gathered 23 points among voting of the league?s coaches and sports information directors to secure sixth place, behind Colgate (72), Lehigh (59), Fordham (51), Bucknell (40), and Lafayette (26). Holy Cross, tied with Georgetown for sixth place, also had 23 points.
The Hoyas will boast a strong offensive line, returning four senior starters: Jon Cummings (McLean, Va./Kent School), Captain Ryan Goethals (Shelby Township, Mich./Brother Rice), and Chris Riley (Miami Lakes, Fla./St. Thomas Aquinas) and Captain Frank Terrazzino (Needham, Mass./Needham). Behind the offensive line, the Hoyas will return a trio of running backs: juniors Marcus Slayton (Cleveland, Ohio/Benedictine) and Kim Sarin (Roseville, Minn./Cretin-Derham, and senior John Sims (Monaca, Pa./Center). The trio combined for a total of 1,580 gained yards in 2003.
On the defensive side, junior defensive end Michael Ononibaku (Amherst, Mass./Amherst), a second team All-Patriot league selection with 50 tackles in 2003, returns for the Hoyas as a dominating force. Senior Captain Brandon Small (Hyattsville, Md./Northwestern) and junior Maurice Banks (Clinton, Md./Gwynn Park) will also anchor the defense from their defensive line and safety positions, respectively.
Georgetown posted a 4-8-0 overall record last season and tied for seventh in the Patriot League with a 1-7 record. The team begins its 2004 season on September 4 at home against St. Francis.
