Georgetown Football Outlasted by Lafayette

Box Score

WASHINGTON, D.C. -- With both the Georgetown Hoyas (1-1, 0-1) and the Lafayette Leopards (2-0, 2-0) coming off high scoring wins in week one, no one expected the first offensive touchdown to come more than halfway through the fourth quarter. That touchdown finally came on a 20-yard pass from the Leopards? Pat Davis to Joseph Ort, giving the Leopards a 17-6 lead and the eventual victory.

Defense was strong on both sides during the first half forcing both teams to play the field position game. Also, both defenses fought off what could have been costly turnovers. Sheldon Epps (Jr., Laurel Springs, N.J./Bishop Eustace) intercepted a pass by Lafayette starter Brad Maurer and advanced the ball to midfield. The Leopard defense held their ground however, and Georgetown was not only unable to take advantage, but had their punt blocked and saw Lafayette take the field at the Hoyas? 37. The Georgetown defense then did its part by stopping the Leopard offense dead and forcing a punt.

The first half looked as though it would end in a 0-0 tie, but Lafayette executed a successful two- minute drill, culminating in a 48-yard field goal that gave the Leopards a 3-0 lead going into the half.

The Georgetown offense picked up a bit in second half but was unable to put it in the end zone, taking a 6-3 lead early in the fourth on two field goals of 31 and 25 yards from Michael Gillman (Jr., Miami, Fla./Killian), who still looked sharp after his career game last week.

Like most defensive struggles this one eventually came down to special teams and turnovers. Still trailing 6-3 and just inside Georgetown territory, Lafayette punter Mike Davis nailed a punt down at the one-yard line. Only out to the two by third down, Georgetown quarterback Keith Allan (So., Long Valley, N.J./West Morris Central) sprinted left and was pressured immediately. He was hit from behind while throwing and multiple defenders bobbled the pass attempt before LC?s Andrew Brown grabbed it around the line of scrimmage and took it in for the score.

Although the Hoyas caused five turnovers on the day, they were only able to turn them into six points. The Hoyas were shut down offensively, rushing for 61 yards and passing for 71. First time starter Allen had a tough day in the pocket, being sacked six times. The Hoyas brought defensive pressure as well, with Michael Ononibaku (Jr., Amherst, Mass./Amherst) picking up three sacks and five stops in the backfield on the day. Lafayette gained 279 yards of total offense with 177 coming on the ground.

The Hoyas travel to Pittsburgh next weekend to face Duquesne on Saturday, September 18, at 1:30 p.m.
