HAMILTON, N.Y. -- Senior quarterback Chris Brown passed for 219 yards and three touchdowns to lead 10th ranked Colgate to a 33-0 shutout win over Georgetown Saturday at Andy Kerr Stadium.
Colgate (2-1, PL 1-0) opens its Patriot League season with its 14th straight league win, and 14th straight home victory. Georgetown (1-3, PL 0-2) drops its third straight game.
Senior tailback Jamaal Branch was Colgate?s leading rusher with 85 yards on 24 carries before leaving the game midway through the third quarter with leg cramps. He scored one touchdown to move into a tie for fifth place in career scoring with 210 points.
The day belonged to the defense which limited the Hoyas to 149 yards of total offense while posting Colgate?s first shutout since the 1988 season when they defeated Davidson, 22-0, at Andy Kerr Stadium.
After a scoreless first period, Colgate scored its first points on a 20-yard pass play from Brown to wide receiver Luke Graham with 8:41 remaining in the first half. Brown hit Graham over the middle on a third-and-nine play. Mike Rava missed the extra point attempt.
After GU's Keith Allan (Long Valley, N.J./West Morris Central) threw an interception with under two minutes to play Colgate's Branch finished off an 11-play, 57-yard drive with a one-yard touchdown plunge. The Raiders led 13-0 at halftime.Colgate closed out the first half scoring on a one-yard TD run by Branch with 15 seconds remaining capping an 11-play, 57-yard drive for a 13-0 halftime lead. Rava kicked the extra point.
Georgetown kept the game close with outstanding defense, spearheaded by defensive ends Michael Ononibaku (Amherst, Mass./Amherst)and Alex Buzbee (Chester, N.J./Seton Hall Prep). The Hoyas rushing game was handled by Marcus Slayton (Cleveland, Ohio/Benedictine) who had 41 yards in the first half but was sidelined with an injury early in the third quarter. Slayton was replaced by Emir Davis (Trenton, N.J./Hun) who ended the day as GU's leading rusher with 49 yards on 13 carries.
In the third quarter, Colgate scored on a 64-yard touchdown pass from Brown to wide receiver DeWayne Long with 9:47 left. Freshman placekicker Brian Walkowski missed the extra point.
The Raiders increased their advantage to 27-0 with 59 seconds left in the third quarter, when sophomore free safety Andrew Moore scored on a 34-yard interception return. It was his first collegiate interception. Colgate converted a two-point conversion attempt when Brown found Graham in the back corner of the end zone.
Colgate?s final touchdown came in the fourth quarter, when Brown connected for a second time with Graham. The touchdown pass play covered 26 yards. Walkowski had his extra point attempt blocked.
Brown completed 16-of-27 passes with Graham on the receiving end seven times for 95 yards and two touchdowns. Long finished with five catches for 86 yards and one touchdown.
The Hoyas next face Bucknell at home on Saturday, October 2, at 1 p.m.
