Women's Golf Summer Highlights

September 3, 2004

Hello reader!

The summer is winding down, and I know personally I?m taking full advantage of sleeping in late and home cooked food before returning to the Hilltop. Nice as it would have been to spend the summer lying in the sun, that?s just not the Georgetown style! The women?s golf team has been busy tearing up the links and beefing up our resumes. So before the summer of ?04 fades into the sunset, we?d love to share some of our summer highlights with you.

I remember spending the summer before I came to Georgetown my freshman year endlessly speculating about what my roommates would be like and making about a hundred packing lists. I?m not so sure that Marie, Katie, and Jenna had that luxury.

Marie Bos spent her summer at home in Orlando, Fl (who wouldn?t want to spend their summer there?). Between physical training and practicing for golf, Marie worked at her father?s law firm. Her busy schedule and hard work paid off when Marie took second in her last junior golf tournament ever (tear!) shooting 75, 79. Marie?s saying goodbye to summer with a road trip to Miami to soak up some sun with her younger sister.

Katie Dwyer of Allentown, PA posted solid scores in several AJGA events this summer. She grabbed seventh at the Randall Parker Shootout at Fieldstone with a 77-83-75. She went on to place 11th at the AJGA Marsh Junior at Apawamis, and 12th and the AJGA Lessing?s Junior Classic. She rounded off her summer by reaching the semi-finals in the Pennsylvania State Amateur. When she wasn?t knocking off the competition she worked as a receptionist at the Allentown Mack Sales & Service Center.

My fellow Jersey girl, Jenna Winokur of Spring Lake, passed her summer days working at a junior golf camp recruiting members of the Hoyas squad 2014. Ok, maybe the real goal was to make some cash, but you never know! Jenna played in a few tournaments this summer but mainly concentrated on new swing thoughts, polishing her game, and getting ready for the move to DC.

Of all our returning sophomores I think I?m most jealous of Rosa Ascolani who spent her break at home in the California paradise of Coronado. Rosa spent much of the summer helping her younger siblings hone their golf games. She also had the privilege to work with Dee-Dee Lasker (of the Women?s Senior Tour) at La Costa Country Club and had an awesome time. In steamy Tijuana Rosa was victorious at an event with an even steamier 74, 73. This foolish girl is actually giving up life in paradise to come back to the east coast, and can?t wait!

Rising sophomore Claire Pogue spent the summer months playing numerous tournaments in her home state of Indiana. Claire shot an 80-83 at the Indiana Women's Open at the Legends of Indiana GC, placing 32nd out of 64. Claire fired a 72-81 in the Evansville Courier and Press Women's City Tournament at Fendrich GC and Oak Meadow GC in Evansville making her runner up in a field of 72. Finishing off her summer at the Indiana Women's State Amateur at Orchard Ridge GC in Fort Wayne Claire took 28th out of 71 shooting 84-80-84.

Hailing from Rochester, NY Maggie Ward showcased her rock solid golf game all over the country this summer. Now we have a lot of short girls on our team but Maggie wins the prize as our tiniest Hoya. And furthermore, as a freshman, well lets face it Maggie ? you were the baby of the team. So like proud parents we were all buzzing when Maggie shot a 75 and qualified for the US Women?s Amateur Public Links Open in Williamsburg this summer. She went on to shoot a 78, 83. Maggie kept up the momentum, won the first flight, and advanced to the quarter finals, in the NY State Amateur. And if her summer wasn?t sweet enough just last week she broke the record of her home course shooting a fabulous 69 (with a shot out of bounds we?d like to note!). She also worked at Lake Shore Golf Club running golf camps for younger golfers. But of all her accomplishments, Maggie is most proud of her bravery in getting her ears pierced ? you go girl.

The first of our returning upperclassmen, Nicole Hayashi, passed the summer doing an awesome internship with the PGA tour?s Production department in Florida. Nicole got to help create all of the shows run by the tour such as PGA Tour Today, Inside the PGA Tour, public service announcements, and network specials. Nicole was already our resident tech expert but we can?t wait for her to wow us with all the cool tricks she?s picked up! But she swears the absolute best perk of the summer was playing privileges at TPC Sawgrass!

One of the toughest competitors I know, Christy Larrimore, struck fear into the hearts of her competitors all summer long as she strode to the tee box. Well she?s actually not that scary, but you get the idea. Christy traveled down to Arkansas where she was a semifinalist in the Women?s Southern. She came a little closer to home and went to the Sweet 16 in the Women?s Trans National in Virginia. Christy was Champion twice this summer in her home state of Maryland. She won the Pepsi Invitational Championship with a 73, 79 as well as the Maryland State Amateur Championship at Congressional Country Club. After such a successful summer, Christy is looking to bring her winning ways back to Georgetown and get the season started!

I spent my summer back at home in Westfield, NJ with the family. I spent 12 weeks of my summer interning with BusinessWeek Magazine?s online department in midtown Manhattan and learned so much! I wrote two articles which were published online, coordinated the application process for MBA student journals, and did first round edits on some website material. I also spent plenty of time practicing, played in some local events, and worked as a caddy at my home course in NJ.

Our only returning senior and captain-extraordinaire, Connie Isler, played an extensive and impressive tournament schedule this summer. Connie qualified for the US Open Sectionals in Williamsburg, VA. At the very difficult 6500 yard course, Connie shot a 77, 79. Connie also participated in the Women?s Southern Amateur Championship where she was a runner up in the first flight. At the Women?s Trans National Amateur Championship Connie reached the quarterfinals of the first flight. She topped off her summer by making the top 16 in the Maryland State Amateur Championship.

Phew, if you were curious how we managed our busy golf schedules along with our class work at Georgetown those ?relaxing? summer schedules should put an end to your worries. Time to do a little back-to-school shopping, packing, and get ready for another great year! Come visit us on the Hilltop and find out why we all love it so much here!
