The Skinny
Georgetown and Lafayette open league play after both teams scored lopsided victories last week against non-conference foes. The Hoyas won 36-7 at home against St. Francis (Pa.) while Lafayette notched a 48-7 win at home versus Marist. Both the Hoyas and the Leopards will be looking to start the year 2-0 which would be the first time it has happened for GU since 1999 and the first time since 2002 for LC.
The Hoyas special teams emerged as a dominant force against St. Francis. Place kicker Michael Gillman converted 5-of-6 field goal attempts and hit all three of his PATs. The punt return team recorded one block, by Derek Franks, and returner Brian Tandy posted a 63-yard return barely missing taking it the distance. GU?s punter Brad Scoffern placed both of his punts inside the 20. Meanwhile GU?s defense only allowed 198 total yards and the offense racked up 347.
Lafayette?s new quarterback, Brad Maurer, had an impressive debut against Marist with a 4-of-6 passing performance for 59 yards and he ran for 67 yards on eight carries. The Leopards return one of the league?s top running backs in Joe McCourt who had 86 yards in game one. The Leopards? defense only gave up 137 yards in the opener.
