Washington, D.C. - The Georgetown field hockey team (3-11) lost a double overtime heartbreaker to Maine, 1-0 today on Kehoe Field. The game remained scoreless until the 98th minute of play.
The Hoyas were outshot by the Black Bears, 22-8, and garnered two penalty corner opportunities to Maine's 12.
The GU defense, led by senior Captain Caitlin Bump (Barrytown, N.Y.), held off seven shots taken by Maine (12-5) in the first half.
In the second half the Black Bears created four penalty corner opportunities but still could not connect for a goal extending the game to overtime.
The first overtime saw the most even play from both teams. The Hoyas took four shots to Maine's six and both teams acquired two penalty corners, neither team finding the back of the goal.
At 98:54, Kasey Spencer shot the ball past goalkeeper Deirdre Crovo (Millersville, Md.) to clinch the win for the Black Bears.
Crovo tallied seven saves on the day while the Hoya defense produced three.
The Hoyas return to action on Wednesday, Oct. 26 at 3:30 p.m. when they host Maryland-Baltimore County on Kehoe Field.
