Hoyas Narrowly Defeat Delaware 9-8 In Men's Lacrosse

Newark, DE - The Georgetown University fifth ranked men's lacrosse team (3-1) narrowly defeated the University of Delaware 9-8 Wednesday evening, March 16 at Rullo Stadium.

Delaware (4-3), which had a two-game win streak snapped, led 6-2 midway through the second quarter and still led 7-6 with 3:46 left in the third quarter before the Hoyas finished off the comeback. Garrett Wilson broke a 7-7 tie on a goal with 12:28 left to play and Matt McBride tallied what proved to be the game-winner with 4:24 remaining to save the Hoyas.

After Georgetown's Brice Queener opened the scoring on a goal just 1:22 into the game, the Blue Hens answered back, scoring four straight goals, including one each by Dan Deckelbaum and Dave Powers, to take a 4-1 lead early in the second quarter.

After Georgetown's Dave Paolisso scored to cut the lead to 4-2, the Hens got goals again by Deckelbaum and Powers just three minutes apart to go up 6-2 with 8:48 left in the opening stanza. Georgetown narrowed the halftime margin to 6-4 on goals by Nick Miaritis and McBride in the final four minutes of the stanza.

The Hoyas came out strong in the second half, tying the game at 6-6 when Trevor Casey scored just 14 seconds into the half and Andrew Baird scored an extra-man goal with 7:17 remaining. Powers gave the Hens their last lead of the night at 7-6 when he took a feed from Cam Howard and finished off his third hat trick of the season with a goal with 3:46 left in the third quarter.

Georgetown's Pete Cannon scored with just six seconds left in the third stanza to tie the game at 7-7 and the Hoyas went up for good as Wilson and McBride tallied for the 9-7 lead. Delaware gave it one last shot, pulling to within one at 9-8 when Andy Hipple scored with 20 seconds left but couldn't score again.

Georgetown won its second straight as McBride scored two goals, Cannon had a goal and two assists, and Sean Denihan had two assists. Goalkeeper Rich D'Andrea stopped 10 shots. Georgetown held a 45-28 advantage in shots.

Powers led the Blue Hens with three goals while Deckelbaum added two goals and an assist. Chris Collins posted 10 saves.

The Hoyas will next face Hobart on March 19 in Geneva, NY. Face off is set for 1 p.m.
