Bethesda, MD--The Georgetown University baseball team (10-6) defeated UMBC (2-6) 4-3 in 10 innings on Thursday afternoon, March 17 at Shirley Povich Field in Bethesda, MD. Matthew Bouchard drove in the game winning run in the bottom of the tenth to claim the victory for the Hoyas. Senior captain Jim Supple led the Hoyas with two runs, three hits, and two RBI and Ryan Craft also added one run and two hits in the victory.
Both teams got on the board early as the Retrievers tallied a run in the top of the first, and the Hoyas drove in two in the first. For UMBC, it was the combination of Ian Carman and Tom Rinaldi who drove in the first run with Carmen scoring a run off a hit by Rinaldi. But in the top of the first the Hoyas answered back. Senior captain Billy Quinn got on base on a walk, and then Craft doubed to left center. Supple then singled to center field, driving in Craft and Quinn to make the score 2-1. The Retrievers then tied it up in the top of the second off a triple by Mike Scheffel who drove in Anthony Socarras.
The score remained tied up at two, yet the Hoyas had chances to score. In the bottom of the fifth, Parker Brooks doubled down the right field line to move Joe Graziano into scoring position. Craft then got on base with a walk, but the Hoyas were unable to bring in the runs. Georgetown had another opportunity in the sixth, with Matthew Bouchard at third and Brandon Davis on base, the UMBC defense was tough and the Hoyas were unable to drive in the runs.
With Georgetown unable to score, UMBC took advantage and grabbed the lead in the top of the seventh when Carman drove in Moran. The Hoyas answered back in the bottom of the eighth when senior Andrew Cleary drove in senior captain Jim Supple who had single and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by Matthew Bouchard to tie the game at three.
The teams were tied up at three at the end of nine; and in the tenth, UMBC had their chance to score yet couldn't bring in the runs with Georgetown's defense creating a double-play to stifle the drive. The Hoyas then got on base and with one out, Bouchard drove in Supple off a single to center field for the 4-3 victory.
The Hoyas received solid pitching for the day, with Eddie Pena pitching eight innings and only allowing three runs. Michael Halloran pitched two and earned the win for the Hoyas. Kyle Wildason was credited with the loss for the Retrievers.
Georgetown will next face St. Peter's on Saturday, March 19 in a double header at Shirley Povich Field. First pitch is set for 12:00 p.m.
