WASHINGTON, D.C.--The Georgetown University men's baseball team (3-4) hosted Lafayette (1-1) on Sunday, February 27, in the Hoyas first home stand of the year. The Hoyas lost the first game of the two game series 3-0, yet came back in the second to defeat the Leopards 9-6.
In the first game, both teams were held scoreless in the first three innings. At the top of the fourth the Leopards broke out the offense, scoring three runs. The Leopard's began the run after Ian Fioretti singled, and then Ian Law walked and Adam Bucci bunted to load the bases with no outs. The Leopards went on to score three runs, by Fioretti, Law, and Bucci.
The Hoyas had two more scoring opportunities as senior captain Billy Quinn singled in the bottom of the sixth and stole second on a wild pitch but was unable to score. Junior Ryan Craft doubled in the bottom of the seventh, yet the Leopards defense prevailed and left Craft stranded. The Hoyas were unable to score and the final remained 3-0, with Lafayette claiming victory.
Quinn led the Hoyas with two hits.
Pitcher Matt Revelle earned the win for Lafayette, pitching a complete game. Eddie Pena tallied his first loss of the season.
In the second game, Lafayette scored early, driving in a run in the top off the second with a run by Bucci off a double by Kevin Leasure. Lafayette's offense stuck again in the fourth, scoring four runs. Ian Law, Frank Cortazar, Bucci, and David Drechsel all tallied runs.
The Hoyas responded in the bottom of the fifth, scoring six runs to gain the 6-5 edge on the Leopards. Parker Brooks drove in two runs, scoring Matt Johnson and Danny Gronski. Mark McLaughlin then doubled, scoring Brooks, and Brandon Davis. Quinn added two RBI, driving in McLaughlin on a two run homerun.
Lafayette tied it up in the top of the eighth, where Mike Raible scored off a hit of Drechsel. Yet the Hoyas kept the momentum, and in the bottom of the ninth, McLaughlin singled, Quinn was intentionally walked, and then Craft blasted a three run homerun to bring the Hoyas to victory. Georgetown defeated Lafayette 9-6.
Quinn and McLaughlin each tallied two runs for the Hoyas, with Quinn adding two RBI and one hit. McLaughlin drove in two RBI and added three hits. Craft drove in the game-winning run. Pitcher Warren Sizemore was credited with the win.
The Hoyas will next face Northeastern on March 5 in Bradenton, Florida. First pitch is set for 10:00 am.
