Baltimore, MD - The Georgetown University baseball team (18-17) defeated UMBC (7-17) by a final score of 10-4 at The Baseball Factory Field at UMBC on Wednesday night. Georgetown with the win takes the season series, 2-0. Craft finished 3-for-5 with three RBI and a run scored for the Hoyas.
Georgetown opened scoring with three runs in the first inning as Parker Brooks led off with a single to center field. A walk to Mark McLaughlin and Billy Quinn loaded the bases for Ryan Craft. Craft doubled down the left field line, driving in two runs. A sacrifice fly by Drew Dargen brought Quinn to the plate for the third run of the inning.
Georgetown extended their lead to five with two runs in the third. Timmy Jones led off with a double to left field and reached third on a wild pitch. McLaughlin hit a sacrifice fly to right field, scoring Jones. The Hoyas later in the inning placed runners on the corner as Matt Johnson doubled to score the Hoyas' fifth run the game.
UMBC started to make a comeback as the Retrievers scored four of the next five runs. UMBC scored their first run of the game in the bottom of the third as Brian Moran knocked his second-consecutive double of the game and moved to third on a ground out by Mike Scheffel. Kyle Wildasin plated Moran with a sacrifice fly. The Retrievers added another run in the fourth with a sacrifice fly out to score Steve Russo.
Trailing 6-2, the Retrievers closed the gap to two as a two-out pinch hitting double by Joe Fowler scored Russo and Alex Laddbush.
UMBC trailed 6-4 heading into the ninth as back-to-back homeruns by the Hoyas sealed the Retrievers fate. Billy Quinn homered with one aboard and one out followed by a shot by Ryan Craft in the Hoyas' next at bat. Georgetown would add one more en route to the 10-4 win.
Michael Halloran went 5.0 innings allowing two runs and five hits for the win. Steve Evans took the loss for UMBC going 2.2 innings allowing five runs on four hits with four walks.
Georgetown will next travel to BIG EAST opponent Seton Hall on Saturday, April 15. First pitch is set for 12 pm for the start of a doubleheader.
