The Scoop
A series that has been defined by high scoring games may have a different spin this time as Georgetown's 13th ranked scoring defense (7.60) will match up with the fifth ranked defense of UMass (7.00). In the five previous matchups between the Hoyas and Minutemen Georgetown has averaged over 13 goals and UMass has averaged over 12. The Hoyas own the all-time series 3-2 and snapped a two game losing streak to the Minutemen last season with a 12-10 win in D.C. Today's game is Georgetown's final regular season road game and the ninth game of the year away from home. The Hoyas enter the game in first place in the ECAC standings with a 3-0-league mark. The Minutemen meanwhile sit tied with Penn State for second place, both owning 3-1 records.

Georgetown boasts a #3 national ranking in the latest USILA STX/Geico poll. The last time Georgetown was ranked No. 3 was on April 14, 2003 when GU opened the year 8-0. The Hoyas held down the No. 3 ranking for three weeks that season before falling at UMass. Last weekend Georgetown defeated Loyola for the Hoyas fourth straight win of the year and fourth consecutive over the Greyhounds. Tewaaraton Trophy candidates Andy Corno and Brodie Merrill had dominating performances in the victory. Corno became the first member of the 300 club as he rounded up six groundballs against LC giving him 301 in his career. Corno started the game winning seven straight face-offs on his way to an 11-of-14 day. Merrill meanwhile helped in some of those face-off wins by collecting a game high 10 groundballs to go with his game-winning goal and one assist.

UMass has won three straight after falling 6-5 at Loyola in late March. The Minutemen ripped off league wins against Penn State, St. John's and Hobart during an undefeated April. UMass' other loss this season was by one goal as well, losing 10-9 at Albany. With defense in mind UMass starting goalie Bill Schell is third in the nation in goals against average at 6.63. On offense the Minutemen look to Sean Morris who has 27 goals and 16 assists.
