MANHASSET, NY - In a high school homecoming game for GU's top point producer and attackman Sean Denihan (Manhasset, NY/Manhasset) Georgetown's No. 5 ranked men's lacrosse team defeated Vermont 9-1 at Manhasset High School in Manhasset, New York. The Hoyas (6-2) are now 6-1 away from home while Vermont drops to 2-5 overall.
The first quarter was an evenly played affair as both teams could not find the back of the net and Vermont held a slight 8 to 7 shot advantage. It was not until Hoya midfielder Pete Cannon (Haverford, PA/The Haverford School) buried two straight goals in the second quarter that either team lit up the scoreboard. The Hoyas held a 3-0 advantage at the break.
In the second half Georgetown outscored the Catamounts 6-1. The third quarter saw Georgetown score two goals before exploding for four in the final period. Freshman midfielder Scott Kahoe (Villanova, PA/Radnor) hit two of GU's final three scores with a cannon blast from the left side of the cage for goal number one and then an over the shoulder shot for goal number two. Vermont notched its lone goal of the game in the final period when Pete Hein scored on Georgetown freshman goalie Miles Kass (Rye, NY/Hotchkiss).
Rich D'Andrea (Belle Mead, NJ/The Peddie School) started the game protecting the cage for Georgetown and shutout the Catamounts for 55 minutes before giving way to Kass. D'Andrea finished the game with six saves while Vermont's goalie, Mike Gabel, made 22 saves on the day and allowed eight of the nine scores.
Also scoring for Georgetown against Vermont were Andrew Baird (Baltimore, MD/Loyola Blakefield), who had two, Denihan who had one goal and one assist, Reyn Garnett (Mt. Kisco, NY/Deerfield Academy) who netted his first of the season and Trevor Casey (Bethesda, MD/Georgetown Prep) . Others recording assists for Georgetown were Kyle Morin (Hanover, NH/The Hotchkiss School) with two, while Andy Corno (Bethesda, MD/Walt Whitman) , Brice Queener (Penn Yan, NY/Penn Yan) and Connor Hartley (Providence, RI/Moses Brown) each had one.
On the day Georgetown out shot Vermont 54 to 25 and won 12 of 14 face-offs, with local Manhasset product Christiaan Trunz (Manhasset, NY/Chaminade) winning two of his three face-off attempts. The Hoyas also won the groundball battle with 44 compared to Vermont's 36.
Next up for the Hoyas will be a mid-week affair at Mt. St. Mary's on Wednesday, April 13, at 4 p.m.
