The Scoop
Georgetown and Army have not met since 2001 and have never faced off in the NCAA Championship. Despite the lack of recent history the team's leaders go way back as GU Head Coach
Dave Urick was a senior lacrosse captain at Cortland State in 1970, the same year that Army leader Jack Emmer began his head-coaching career at Cortland State. Since Urick has headed up the Hoyas they are 6-1 all-time against Emmer's Army squads and are currently on a four-game winning streak against the Black Knights. When the teams have met in Washington, D.C. the Hoyas are 3-0 all-time and have averaged over 14 goals and limited Army to an average of seven.
Georgetown has been saddled with four losses this season, with three of the four coming against top eight seeds in this year's NCAA Championship. The Hoya defense has been riddled with injuries but starting against Army the team's entire original starting defense will be back in uniform. LSM and Tewaaraton Trophy hopeful Brodie Merrill has played in all 13 games and been the most consistent player in the Blue and Gray. He has a team high 87 groundballs and has also scored four goals and handed out four assists. Close defenseman John Trapp and goalie Rich D'Andrea have also not missed a game and against Army they will be reunited with close defensemen Reyn Garnett and Rob Smith, who both have missed numerous games this year because of injury and illness. It will be the first time all five of GU's top defenders will be able to play since early April.
After losing its season opener against Syracuse Army ripped off nine straight wins and climbed into the nation's top 10. But an end of season slump has seen the Black Knights fall in four of its last six games. Three of the losses were at the hands of NCAA top seeded teams in #2 Duke and twice to #4 Navy. Georgetown's defense will be matched up against two of the nation's best attackmen in Jim Wagner who has a team high 41 goals and John Walker who is right behind with 38.
