Bethesda, MD--The Georgetown University baseball team (25-27; 7-15 BE) lost to Rutgers University (29-19; 11-10 BE) 5-2 on Monday afternoon at Shirley Povich field. The Scarlet Knights claimed a 2-1 edge in the season series. Jim Supple tallied one hit, one run, and one RBI while Timmy Jones added one hit and one run.
Rutgers started the scoring early, tallying one run in the first where Colin Gaynor singled Todd Frazier across the plate. Rutgers added another two runs in the second, when Frazier blasted a two-run homerun to make the score 3-0.
Georgetown added a run in the fourth to cut the score to 3-1. With the bases loaded, Supple drew a walk to score Jones who started off the inning with a walk.
The Scarlet Knights added another tally in the fifth, off a Steve Hook hit who advanced Johnny Defendis to third, and then scored on a throwing error. Rutgers added their final run of the game in the top of the seventh, when Hook doubled to bring Cory Rodriguez across the plate to make the score 5-2.
The Hoyas tried to mount a comeback in the ninth, yet fell short by three runs. With two outs, and two on base, Matthew Bouchard singled up the middle to score Supple, yet the inning would end there. The Hoyas fell 5-2.
OJ DeChristofano (4-3) earned the win for Rutgers, while Georgetown's Tom Braun (3-2) credited with the loss.
Georgetown will next travel to VMI on Tuesday, May 17. First pitch is set for 4 pm.
