Washington, DC--The Georgetown University baseball team has had two former athletes make professional baseball advances. On May 31, 2005, Eddie Pena (B '05) signed with the Worcester Tornadoes of the Canadian American Association of Professional Baseball (Can-Am) league. In addition, former teammate Michael Lombardi (B '04), signed by the Philadelphia Phillies as a non-drafted free agent on June 12, 2004, was pulled up to the AA Reading on May 31, 2005 after playing at A Clearwater for the 2005 season.
Pena had an impressive four years on the Hilltop, breaking the Georgetown Single Season Strikeout record, as well as the Georgetown Career Single Season record. He tallied 75 strikeouts in his senior season, breaking the ten year record of 66 set in 1995. Pena broke the career record of 201 set in from 1993-1996, which now stands at 213. His senior season, Pena posted a 4.76 ERA in 96.1 innings pitched.
Lombardi began his professional career with Gulf Coast Phillies (R) in 2004. He hit .394 with 12 RBI in the July games, and was promoted to A Lakewood for his success. In the 2005 season, Lombardi was moved up to A Clearwater. At Georgetown, Lombardi led the squad his senior season in batting average, hits, doubles, and RBI.
