Washington, D.C. - The Georgetown field hockey team fell just short tonight in an overtime thriller at Rutgers, 3-2. The Hoyas fall to 4-7 with a 0-3 mark in the BIG EAST Conference. The Scarlet Knights improve to 5-9, 1-2 BE. The Hoyas came back from a two-goal deficit to force the overtime period.
At the 74:30 mark, a penalty was called on GU, giving Rutgers a penalty stroke, which would end the game with a final score of 3-2 in favor of the Scarlet Knights.
Rutgers had just doubled its lead to two when freshman midfielder Alice Murnen (Princeton, N.J./Stuart Country Day) scored her second goal of the season at 57:38, cutting Rutgers' lead to 2-1.
With less than seven minutes to play in regulation, freshman midfielder Chelsea Aiken (Hudson, Ohio/Western Reserve Academy) scored the equalizer off a penalty opportunity, the assists going to sophomore midfielder Maggie Farrand (Baltimore, Md./Bryn Mawr) and senior co-captain Megan Cellucci (Malvern, Pa./Villa Maria Academy). This was Aiken's fourth goal of the year and her second in BIG EAST action. She now leads the team in goals and points (9).
Rutgers led 1-0 at the half with a goal from Amy Lewis. Lewis would score all three of the Scarlet Knight goals.
The Georgetown offense improved throughout the game as they were held to zero shots taken in the first half but took three in the second, scoring two goals from three shots.
Sophomore goalkeeper Deirdre Crovo (Millersville, Md./Severna Park) posted three saves and allowed three goals on the day.
The Hoyas return to action on Sunday when they play No. 10 Connecticut in a BIG EAST matchup. The game is slated for 1 p.m.
