San Francisco, Calif. - The Georgetown University baseball team dropped a 5-0 decision to the University of San Francisco at in a non-conference game at Benedetti Diamond on Saturday. The Hoyas fall to 6-10 on the season.
Timmy Jones (Ledgewood, N.J./Morristown) and Mark McLaughlin (Walnut Creek, Calif./De La Salle) both went 1-4 at the plate for GU.
Daniel Kennedy (West Orange, N.J./Regis) did not allow an earned run in 4.1 innings of relief and Grady McConnell (Capistrano, Calif./Capistrano Valley) allowed just one hit in a three-inning relief stint.
Don senior right-hander Patrick McGuigan threw a complete-game two-hit shutout, striking out a career-high 12 batter, yielding one Hoya batter to reach second base.
USF started the scoring in the bottom of the first inning, sending nine batters to the plate and scoring four runs. Sophomore third-baseman Joey Railey singled and advanced to second on a wild pitch. After two walks, senior outfielder Stefan Gartrell lined a single to right field, scoring Railey and Tavo Hall. Following a sac bunt, and a passed ball, Gartrell then scored after the Hoyas tried to catch freshman infielder Zach Kim stealing second base.
In the third, San Francisco tallied the game's final run on a Kim RBI single.
Georgetown's two hits came in the third and sixth innings. The first came off the bat of McLaughlin who singled into right. Jones added a single to center for the final Hoyas hit.
USF and Georgetown play the final game of the three-game set on Sunday, March 12 at Benedetti Diamond. First pitch is set for noon.
