Final Stats
Syracuse, N.Y. - The No. 8 ranked Georgetown University women's lacrosse team toppled the No. 13 Syracuse Orange, 10-7 Saturday in the BIG EAST Conference opener for both schools at the Carrier Dome. The Hoyas improve to 3-0 on the season.
Georgetown, which improves to 9-0 all-time vs. SU, received four goals from Coco Stanwick (Baltimore, Md./Notre Dame Prep). The junior also won eight of the Hoyas' 15 draw controls. GU held a 15-4 draw control advantage.
Sophomore Maggie Koch (Philadelphia, Pa./Springside) matched a career-high with 11 saves in her fourth career start.
Junior attacker Sara Zorzi (Timonium, Md./Roland Park Country School) recorded her first career hat trick to go along with two assists and was one of three Hoyas with five ground balls.
Stanwick and sophomore Patty Piotrowicz (Plymouth Whitemarsh, Pa./Plymouth Whitemarsh) also corralled five ground balls.
Laura Cipro (Ellicott City, Md./Mt. Hebron) and Stephanie Zodtner (Wayne, Pa./Conestoga) had three ground balls apiece.
Stanwick got Georgetown on the board more than seven minutes in, causing an Orange turnover near midfield and racing towards the other end beat the Syracuse goalie for the game's first score.
Syracuse tied it on an unassisted goal by Megan Mosenson with 20 minutes to go in the opening half.
GU took the lead, 2-1 with 17:58 left on a goal by Bridget Noon (Annapolis, Md./St. Mary's) after she took a pretty feed from Zorzi.
Noon gave GU a 3-1 advantage with 15:55 to go on an unassisted goal when the freshman fired a shot into the upper left corner of the goal.
Syracuse sliced the Hoya lead to 3-2 with 13:29 to go before intermission.
Lucy Poole (Lutherville, Md./Towson) answered immediately with an unassisted goal and GU scored three straight goals over a minute and a half stretch to take a 6-2 lead. Zorzi took a feed from Piotrowicz for a 5-2 GU lead with just over ten minutes to play. Thirty seconds later, Stanwick notched her second marker of the game. Chloe Asselin caused a turnover near midfield and got the ball ahead to Paige Andrews (Newtown Square, Pa./Archbishop Carroll). Andrews found Stanwick on the doorstep with 9:34 left.
Georgetown took a 6-3 lead into the break, marking the third straight game, the Hoyas held an advantage at halftime.
After the Orange opened the scoring in the second half, Georgetown responded at the 26:09 mark on a beautiful one-time shot and goal by Stanwick after she took a crisp pass from Poole for a 7-4 GU edge.
Stanwick tallied again at the 18:02 mark to give GU an 8-4 lead when she took a pass from Zorzi from behind the net.
The game went scoreless for more then seven minutes before Zorzi scored an assisted lefthanded goal with 10:04 to go as Georgetown extended their lead to 9-5.
Cipro intercepted a pass tossed an outlet to Asselin. Once Asselin got into the offensive end, Sutton, from behind the net, found Zorzi as the Hoyas once again doubled up the Orange with 9:06 remaining.
Georgetown has scored ten or more goals in all nine of their meetings.
The Hoyas will be back in action again on Wednesday, March 15 when they host William & Mary in a non-league contest. GU's home opener will begin at 3:30 p.m.
