Stephen Burns (Westchester, Pa./Malvern Prep) struck out five and allowed just two earned runs in six innings and improved to 3-1 on the season to lead the Hoya baseball team to a 9-3 win at Coppin State Wednesday afternoon. Georgetown snaps an eight-game slide and improves to 7-11 on the season.
Junior centerfielder Mark McLaughlin (Walnut Creek, Calif./De La Salle) drove in two runs while and junior catcher Brandon Davis (Poway, Calif./The Bishop's School) drove in four runs for the Hoyas, who broke open a 3-2 GU lead with six runs in the top of the sixth inning.
McLaughlin, Davis, senior Ryan Craft (Jupiter, Fla./The Benjamin School), Matthew Bouchard (E. Greenwich, R.I./Bishop Hendricken) and Matthew Maranges (Miami, Fla./Belen Jesuit Prep) all ripped two hits for Georgetown.
Grady McConnell (Capistrano, Calif./Capistrano Valley), Mark Dutmers (Sarasota, Fla./Riverview) and Mike Hoy (Southlake Carroll, Texas/Southlake Carroll) combined for three innings or relief.
Georgetown, who recorded double-figure hits for the seventh time this season, plated two runs in the first inning on a Davis two-RBI single through the right side. GU made it 3-0 in the second when Drew Dargen (Edmond, Okla./Edmond North) had a RBI single which scored Maranges.
After the Eagles scored two runs in their half of the fifth cut the Georgetown lead to 3-2, the Hoyas raced out to a 9-2 advantage with six runs in the sixth. McLaughlin doubled home two runs with one out before rightfielder Timmy Jones (Ledgewood, N.J./Morristown) plated Derek deGrijs (Nashville, Tenn./Goodpasture) with a sacrifice fly for a 6-2 lead. Three batters later, Davis came through again with a two-RBI double to centerfielder.
The relief trio of McConnell, Dutmers and Hoy faced just two batters over the minimum over the final three frames.
Georgetown will be in action again when GU hosts Duquesne on Saturday, March 18 in a non-league twinbill that starts at noon.
