Washington, D.C. - The Georgetown University softball program hosted its first ever home games today with a doubleheader against Gardner-Webb University at the Mount Vernon Athletic Complex. Georgetown lost the first game, 8-0, and the second, 13-1, to fall to 1-9 on the season while Gardner-Webb improved to 5-15.
The first game saw a tight battle for the first two innings, as Georgetown defense left six Bulldog runners stranded. In the bottom of the first junior catcher Cathy Richter (Cherry Hill, N.J./Cherry Hill East) singled to left field to try to start a Hoya rally, but she was left stranded.
Gardner-Webb opened up the scoring in the third inning, tallying six runs on four hits and four errors en route to an 8-0 victory.
Freshman pitcher Courtney Clark (Ridgewood, N.J./Choate Rosemary Hall) struck out six Bulldog batters in five innings pitched.
In the second game, the Hoyas jumped out to a quick start. In the bottom of the first, sophomore leadoff hitter Katherine Incantalupo (Forest Hills, N.Y./Townsend Harris) drove a single up the middle and a successful bunt from sophomore Katharine Lang (Princeton Jct., N.J./The Lawrenceville School) put runners on first and second. The Hoyas would not be able to capitalize, leaving two stranded.
In the bottom of the third,sophomore second baseman Anna McCann (Mt. Pleasant, S.C./Bishop England) reached on a dropped third strike and a sacrifice bunt from Incantalupo advanced McCann to second. A dropped throw by the GWU first baseman allowed Lang to reach and moved McCann into scoring position at third. Richter hit a sacrifice fly to left field, recording an RBI as McCann scored the lone GU run.
Sophomore pitcher Anna Wheatley (St. Thomas, Virgin Islands/Antilles) pitched four innings, striking out four GWU batters.
"I was disappointed with our performance today," Head Coach Pat Conlan said. "Our goal is to get better with each day that passes, and today, I don't feel that we met that goal. We'll go back to work tomorrow and prepare for our next game."
The Hoyas return to the field on Tuesday, March 21 for when they travel to Baltimore, Md. for a doubleheader against Coppin State. The first game is slated for a 2 p.m. start.
