Bethesda, Md. - The Georgetown University baseball team extended its winning streak to five games, matching last year's longest streak, with an 8-5 win over visiting Navy at Shirley Povich Field on Thursday afternoon. The Hoyas improve to 6-3 overall.
Senior Timmy Jones (Ledgewood, N.J./Morristown) scored four runs for the Hoyas, one shy of the all-time single-game record and freshman Darren Sizemore (Hamilton, Ohio/Ross) went seven innings for his second collegiate victory.
Jones, the designated hitter, was 3-4 on the day with three hits, four runs scored and a walk. Sizemore allowed three earned runs on seven hits while walking three and striking out three in his longest outing of the season.
Navy (8-3-1) got on the board in the top of the first on a two-run home run to left center by Thomas Hamilton.
The Hoyas would answer back in their half of the inning. Sophomore Matthew Bouchard (East Greenwich, R.I./Bishop Hendricken) walked to start off the inning and would come around to score on a single to right field by Jones. The Navy rightfielder would overthrow the cutoff allowing Jones to advance around to third on the error. Senior Drew Dargen (Edmond, Okla./Edmund North) drove an RBI single to right field to tie the game at 2-2.
In the bottom of the third, sophomore Brandon Davis (Poway, Calif./The Bishop's School) put the Hoyas ahead with an infield single to shortstop deep in the hole. Jones scored from third on the infield single for the 3-2 Georgetown advantage. Senior Ryan Craft (Jupiter. Fla./The Benjamin School) put Jones, who had singled, in scoring position with a one-out double down the right field line.
Jones extended the Hoyas' lead in the bottom of the fifth with an opposite field home run, his first of the season. Georgetown led 4-2 after five frames.
The Middies would make it a one run game in the top of sixth. Mitch Harris reached on a fielder's choice, advanced to second on a throwing error and moved to third on a wild pitch. A Jared Munde ground out to the third baseman, would allow Harris to score and cut the GU lead to 4-3.
In the bottom of the seventh, the Hoyas would tack on three more runs. Sophomore Derek deGrijs (Nashville, Tenn./Goodpasture) walked to lead off the inning and would advance to second on a bunt single by Jones. Craft walked to load bases and lefthander Kevin Heasley came in to pitch for Navy. Dargen hit a bases-loaded single to left field driving in deGrijs and Jones for the 6-3 Hoya lead. With runners on second and third, sophomore Matt Harrigan (Syracuse, N.Y./Christian Brothers) hit a sac fly to deep right center allowing Craft to tag from third for the 7-3 advantage heading into the eight.
Navy was able to notch two runs on two hits and two errors in the eighth inning to make it a two-run game. Two Hoya throwing errors put Midshipmen on second and third with no outs. Joshua Martinez hit an RBI single allowing Mitch Harris to score the unearned run. Ryan McGinn singled to load the bases and B.J. Bickel hit into a fielder's choice for the RBI, making it a 7-5 game.
The Hoyas added an insurance run in the bottom of the eighth on a double to right field by deGrijs. Bouchard earned a one out walk and advanced to second on a failed pickoff attempt by Navy before putting Georgetown up 8-5 on deGrijs' extra base hit.
Freshman righthander Matt White (0-1) went 4.2 innings for the Midshipmen, allowing three earned runs on six hits. He walked four and struck out three.
Sophomore Daniel Kennedy (West Orange, N.J./Regis) pitch 2.0 innings of relief, giving up three hits, two unearned runs and one walk and striking out three.
Dargen led the Hoyas with three RBI on two hits, and Bouchard scored two runs and walked twice.
