George Washington Tops Georgetown, 8-3

April 19, 2006

Box Score

Bethesda, Md. - George Washington starter Derek Haese threw six shutout innings and the visiting Colonials scored five runs in the first two innings en route to an 8-3 win over Georgetown in a non-league college baseball game at Shirley Povich Field Wednesday night.

The Hoyas fall 17-21 overall, while George Washington improves to 14-23.

Georgetown had chances, putting runners on base in the first six innings, but could not plate a run. The Colonials got on board with a pair of runs in the first inning, taking a 2-0 lead. Hoya sophomore starter Ben McKean (Concord, Mass./St. Mark's) hit Michael parker to lead off the game and after a passed ball, Doug Eizen doubled him home for the game's first run. Eizen scored on an error, giving the Colonials a two-run lead.

Mickey Shupin was issued a leadoff walk in the second and moved to second when Pat Lehman reached on a sacrifice bunt. Shupin scored on a wild pitch and a single from Parker brought Lehman home with the second run, giving the Colonials a 4-0 lead. Parker moved to second on a ground out and scored when Charlie Kruer singled to right. The Colonials added a run in the fourth on Eizen's RBI sacrifice bunt and then another in the fifth inning when a run scored on a wild pitch with the bases loaded.

Georgetown had the bases loaded in the second after a double from sophomore catcher Brandon Davis (Poway, Calif./The Bishop's School) and walks to Matt Harrigan (Syracuse, N.Y./CBA) and Derek deGrijs (Nashville, Tenn./Goodpasture), but could not plate a run. In the third, senior Timmy Jones (Ledgewood, N.J./Morristown) hit a leadoff single and moved to third when senior Ryan Craft (Jupiter, Fla./The Benjamin School), but Haese struck out the next two batters to escape the jam.

The Hoyas got on the board in the seventh, as GW reliever Jim Duggan walked Jones and hit Craft by a pitch. Senior Drew Dargen (Edmond, Okla./Edmund North) followed with a sharp line drive up the middle, but Duggan was able to catch it. His throw to first went into the outfield, and allowed Jones to score and Craft to move to third. Tim Sexton relieved Duggan and a wild pitch brought in Craft with the team's second run. Sophomore Matt Maranges (Miami, Fla./Belen Jesuit Prep) followed with a solo home run to left, cutting the lead to 7-3.

An RBI single from Matt Owens in the eighth inning plated George Washington's final run.

Haese, who improved to 4-2, threw six innings, giving up no runs on six hits with six walks and four strikeouts.

Craft had a pair of doubles and scored a run for the Hoyas, who had three runs on seven hits. McKean threw four innings and gave up six runs, four earned, with two walks and three strikeouts. Freshman Andy Ferich (Collegeville, Pa./Perkiomen Valley) threw one inning, giving up one run on three hits with two walks and one strikeout. Dargen and senior Matthew Johnson (Bothell, Wash./Newport) each threw two scoreless innings.

Georgetown, which finished an eight-game homestand tonight, travels this weekend for a key BIG EAST three-game series at Cincinnati. The Hoyas and Bearcats open the series on Friday, April 21, with first pitch slated for 6:30 p.m.
