Washington, D.C. - Georgetown University head field hockey coach Laurie Carroll announced the team's schedule for the 2006 season. This is the first season the field hockey program will be competing in the BIG EAST Conference.
"With the addition of six BIG EAST schools, our team faces an exciting and competitive challenge for 2006, especially with nationally-ranked (STX/NFHCA Division I Coaches Poll) powerhouses such as Louisville (12), Connecticut (14), and Villanova (17)," Carroll said. "We look forward to this long-awaited challenge.
"We're excited about the addition of the Class of 2010 and we will strive to compete in the conference tournament (held in Louisville, Ky.) which includes the top four BIG EAST finishers. Although a lofty goal, this team is hoping to surprise some of our opponents in our inaugural season of BIG EAST play."
The schedule is highlighted by 10 home games, three of which are against league opponents.
The Hoyas open the season with a road trip to Saint Joseph's (Pa.) for a 1 p.m. game. The Hoyas then travel to St. Francis (Pa.) on Sept. 1. The Hoyas defeated the Red Flash, 3-1, during the 2005 campaign.
On Saturday, Sept. 9, Georgetown hosts Lehigh in its first home game of the season. Lehigh will be the first in a three-game stretch at home on Kehoe Field with games against Robert Morris (Sept. 10) and Towson (Sept. 13) as well.
The Hoyas will then travel to Farmville, Va. for a re-match against the Longwood Lancers. The Hoyas defeated Longwood, 3-2 in overtime, last season.
GU returns home for two games, including conference-opponent, Providence, on Sept. 20. This will be the first BIG EAST home game in program history.
A four-game road stint will have the Hoyas traveling to UMBC for a non-league game before a three-game conference road trip against Syracuse, Rutgers and Connecticut, respectively.
The Hoyas return home for a five-game home stretch to end the season. During the stretch, the Hoyas will face its last two BIG EAST opponents with Louisville and Villanova.
Georgetown ends the season with a 1 p.m. matchup against non-conference opponent, Holy Cross on Oct. 29.
