Washington, D.C. - The Georgetown field hockey team won their first game of the season with a 3-0 shutout over St. Francis today in Loretto, Pa. Two goals from sophomore forward Katie Lachman (Bryn Mawr, Pa./Radnor) would ensure the Hoya victory.
The Hoyas out-shot the Red Flash (0-2), 8-4 overall, with the GU defense holding St. Francis to just one shot taken in the first half. With the minutes closing down to halftime, Lachman took a pass from freshman midfielder Willemijn Wijsman (Hilversum, The Netherlands/International School Hilversum) and scored the first goal of the game, her first of the season.
In the second half, Wijsman scored her first goal as a Hoya to put the Blue and Gray up, 2-0; the assist went to sophomore forward Maggie Farrand (Baltimore, Md./Bryn Mawr). Just minutes shy of the end of regulation, Lachman scored the final goal for Georgetown, unassisted, from five yards out.
Senior goalkeeper Abby Winer (Rising Sun, Md./Rising Sun) recorded her first win of the season with the shutout, holding off three SFU attempts.
Georgetown (1-1) returns to action on Saturday, September 9 when they host Lehigh on Kehoe Field at 1 p.m. It will be the first of a three-game home stint for the squad as they host Robert Morris on Sunday, September 10 and Towson on Wednesday, September 13.
