Washington, D.C. - The Georgetown University field hockey team welcomes BIG EAST Conference opponent and third-ranked Connecticut (NFHCA/STX Division I National Coaches Poll) on Friday, October 5, for a 5 p.m. game at the University of Maryland Field Hockey and Lacrosse Complex. The matchup will be just the fourth meeting between the two teams with Connecticut leading the head-to-head series, 3-0.
The Hoyas are currently 2-9 overall with a 0-2 mark in BIG EAST Conference play. Junior midfielder Katie Lachman leads the team with seven goals and adds two assists. Lachman ranks ninth overall in the league in points with 16. Classmate and goalkeeper Deirdre Crovo (Millersville, Md./Severna Park) leads the conference in saves per league contest. In two BIG EAST games, Crovo has posted 15 saves, averaging 7.50 per game.
In last year's matchup, sophomore Willemijn Wijsman (Hilversum, The Netherlands/International School Hilversum) tallied the lone goal in a 5-1 loss to the Huskies. It was the first goal the Hoyas had ever scored against Connecticut in its three meetings.
No. 3 Connecticut enters Friday's matchup with an 11-1 overall record and 1-1 slate in league action. During the 2007 season, the Huskies have not been ranked lower than fifth in the National Field Hockey Coaches Association/STX Division I National Coaches Poll. In the preseason poll, Connecticut ranked fifth and has moved up to the third spot for the last two weeks. The only loss suffered by UConn this season as been at the hands of Villanova in a one-goal game (3-2). The Huskies have shut out five different teams this year, including 16th-ranked Louisville (6-0) last Friday.
