Washington, D.C. - The Georgetown University softball team lost two games today at the Buzz Classic hosted by Georgia Tech University in Marietta, Ga. The Hoyas lost a close game to Furman today, 6-4, before dropping a five-inning 14-0 decision to Radford. The Hoyas are now 1-10 and look forward to two more days of action at the Buzz Classic.
The Blue and Gray gave Furman a quick 4-0 edge after the first inning that was littered with three GU errors. The deficit would be too much for the Hoyas to overcome. Georgetown gave up another run in the second inning before starting a rally in the third attempting a comeback.
With runners on second and third, freshman Jadig Garcia (Zebulon, N.C./East Wake) hit a groundball to plate freshman Sarah Kamenski (Mountain View, Calif./St. Francis) for the game's first run. During the next at bat, Garcia attempted to steal second as Furman's catcher Megan Jaudon's errant throw went to center, allowing Garcia to move up to third and junior Katharine Lang (Princeton Jct., N.J./The Lawrenceville School) to cross home plate. Freshman Samantha Peters (Suwannee, Ga./Collins Hill) then lifted a sacrifice fly to left, bringing home Garcia as the Hoyas scored three runs in the inning, all unearned.
The Paladins would score an additional run in the fifth inning for the 6-3 lead.
In the sixth inning, a single through the left side and a stolen base would put freshman Olivia Newhouse (Weston, Conn./Green Farms Academy) in scoring position on second. A RBI single from sophomore Katherine Incantalupo (Forest Hills, N.Y./Townsend Harris) scored Newhouse for GU's fourth and final run of the game.
A scoreless seventh inning would end the game with the Paladins taking the victory.
Kamenski pitched 4 2/3 innings allowing all six runs while freshman Jennifer Connell (Roswell, Ga./Roswell) pitched a hitless 2 1/3 innings, walking two batters.
In the second game, Georgetown was dealt a five-inning, 14-0 loss at the hands of the Radford Highlanders.
"We were not ready to play in the first inning against Furman," Head Coach Pat Conlan said. "Between our mental and physical mistakes, we got ourselves in a hole early on. Although we made a great comeback and played well the remainder of the game, it was too late."
The Hoyas return to the diamond tomorrow morning for the second day of action at the Buzz Classic when they play Troy with first pitch slated for 10 a.m. GU will then play South Dakota State for a 7 p.m. tilt.
