Washington, D.C. - Three Georgetown University pitchers have been named to their respective summer league all-star teams for the 2007 season. Juniors Michael Gaggioli (Mission Viejo, Calif./Santa Margarita Catholic), Erick Chandler (Somerset, N.J./Rutgers Prep), and sophomore Jimmy Saris (Great Falls, Va./Langley) are all enjoying outstanding summers with their respective squads.
Gaggioli currently leads his team, the Vermont Mountaineers, in wins, innings pitched and strikeouts while also compiling a 1.96 ERA and guiding them to within two games of first-place Holyoke. Due, to his stellar start he has been named as the starting pitcher for the North Division Team in the upcoming New England Collegiate Baseball League All-Star Game.
The game is being held this upcoming Sunday, July 22, at Joe Wolfe Field in North Adams, Mass. First pitch is scheduled for 7:10 p.m.
Saris is also enjoying a strong start to his summer season as he currently leads the Bethesda Big Train in wins while holding opponents to a .207 bating average. Saris' team is also chasing first place in the standings as they trail Youse's Maryland Orioles by two games.
Recently, Saris was named as a pitcher for the West All-Stars in the upcoming Cal Ripken Sr. Collegiate Baseball League All-Star Game. The game will be held on Monday, July 23 at Ripken Stadium with first pitch slated for 7:05 p.m. The contest, televised live on MASN, will be preceded by the Home Run Derby at 5 p.m.
Chandler has amassed a 4-1 record with the Southern California Fire of the Western Baseball Association. Chandler, the third GU pitcher to be named to a summer league all-star team, helped lead the Fire to victory in their Pacific Coast National Baseball Congress World Series Qualifier.
To qualify, the Fire had to win three-straight games. They began their quest by toppling the South Bay Saints, advancing to the Championship game. The Fire moved on to face the then-undefeated Palm Springs Power, defeating them in back-to-back games twice to win the qualifier.
