Washington, D.C. - The Georgetown University field hockey team hosts St. Francis (Pa.) in its home opener on Friday, August 31 at the University of Maryland Field Hockey and Lacrosse Complex in College Park, Md. for a 5 p.m. game. The Hoyas will host Virginia Commonwealth University on Sunday, September 2 at 3 p.m.
The Blue and Gray enter Friday's contest with a 0-2 overall record after losing 7-0 to No. 11 James Madison last Saturday and then a heartbreaking 4-3 double-overtime loss to Appalachian State on Sunday.
The Hoya scoring is currently led by a trio of juniors in forward Maggie Farrand (Baltimore, Md./Bryn Mawr), defender Ashton Hospodar (St. Davids, Pa./Radnor) and midfielder Katie Lachman (Bryn Mawr, Pa./Radnor) as they all scored one goal each against Appalachian State. Senior co-captain Lauren Sheets (Lutherville, Md./Garrison Forest) and sophomores Alice Murnen (Princeton, N.J./Stuart Country Day) and Willemijn Wijsman (Hilversum, The Netherlands/International School Hilversum) all recorded one assist in the game as well.
Freshman goalkeeper Tiffany Kaszuba (Howell, N.J./Red Bank Regional) debuted in the cage last weekend against James Madison. In two starts, she has made eight saves and allowed 11 goals.
Tomorrow's game is the season opener for St. Francis (Pa.) as they return 13 letterwinners (nine starters) from last year's 1-15 team. The Hoyas lead the all-time head-to-head series, 3-0, and won last year's game, 3-0.
Virginia Commonwealth enters the weekend with a 1-0 record with a win over Fairfield last Saturday. Senior Jenna Harris scored two goals for the Rams en route to the 4-1 win. Georgetown trails VCU in the head-to-head series, 6-9-2, but has won three of the last four contests. When the two teams last met, the Rams took a 3-0 decision on Georgetown's Kehoe Field. Before they play Georgetown, Virginia Commonwealth will take on American on Friday, August 31 for a 4 p.m. match.
