Georgetown Head Coach John Thompson III
On Georgetown's shooting struggles...
"No I think that the whole game can be attributed to them. If you watch all of the games that they've played this year, they do a very good job of sticking with their stuff, with the lack of a better way to put it, on the offensive end and the defensive end. They execute, they execute very well but they haven't been able to pull out the games. Every game has been tough, every game has been a struggle, every game has come down to the end. They're a veteran team that not only has NCAA Tournament experience, but has played a very high level of competition this year. They did a good job of defending us."
On Mount St. Mary's Transition Offense...
"They get a lot off of their transition offense, I think that in terms of transition, they are more consistent than Tennessee or Memphis...Everyone comes at you every possession, whether it is a make or miss. We did a poor job on a possession or two getting back, but they did a good job doing what they do."
On the play of Julian Vaughn and other reserves...
"He came in there and he was effective, in fact he was extremely effective. I told him and I told the guys I probably should have thrown him back in there just because his energy level was high today and he was productive in using his energy. To tell you the truth I feel the same way when Omar (Wattad), Nikita (Mescheriakov) I thought those guys gave us something good with the time that they were in there."
On attempting a season-high 38 free throws...
"We've been getting to the line this year. In general, we put an emphasis on getting into the paint and feeding the posts which we always have done but posting different guys and penetration we want to get multiple paint touches and in doing that, we've been getting to the line. We've been getting to the line more this year, than in past year particularly in the first half. We missed a couple foul shots in the first half that could have made you feel better going into halftime. But we've been getting to the line more and for the most part making shots."
On the team's mental focus with exams...
"Yes, we're in exams, we've gone through two weeks of exams and all of these guys are fatigued. Exam period is rough, you're staying up late studying and everyone forgets about it but that is a dynamic that's real, its tangible. I believe that this group no matter what is going on is tougher than that, is stronger than that. When we walk onto the court in practice at McDonough or in games here for that two or three hours whatever time it is, we can block that out."
Georgetown Player Quotes
DaJuan Summers
On Mount St. Mary's:
"They are a real good transition team coach says, so we were just trying to figure out how to stop them in transition."
On if he was surprised how close the game was:
"I can't say that because every game has the potential to be that close in college basketball. The way they play they're competitors; you got to be ready to play."
Omar Wattad
On his play:
"I come here and do whatever coach asks me to do. If he wants me to knock down a shot, I'm going to knock down the shot. Get rebounds, get rebounds and play good D and getting down the floor and trying to be a leader."
On winning a close game against Mount St. Mary's:
"Even though we won the game, we see things we need to do for the next game. Our coach said it was not so much that we had a bad shooting night, the effort wasn't there on every possession and just trying to figure out ways no matter what's going on with exams, personal life, whatever, to keep the intensity and stay focused and keep going on, no matter what else is going on."
Mount St. Mary's Head Coach Milan Brown
On Mount St. Mary's performance...
I was pleased with the effort. I thought down the stretch we had a couple of lapses that could've put us in better position to win, it's just sometimes frustrating when you compete when you can almost see the light at the end of the tunnel and all of a sudden in a matter of forty seconds you go from we have the ball down six let's make a play to they're up by ten and at the free throw line.
On Georgetown's offense...
"Because they're big and they're skilled even when they came on transition we were still spread out because they can all shoot and they can all drive. They're not 15th in the country for nothing."
On Chris Wright...
"Chris is a really good player. We've seen Chris play since high school so we knew he was a good player. He actually played for the same AAU team that I played and coached for. He's so strong and he has the speed to go with it makes him a really tough guard. He made some plays, especially in the first when we actually played some really good defense, but his size and his speed allowed him to still make a play in the lane. We knew he was their best ball-handler and he really makes them go."
On Georgetown's defense...
"We had enough film on them obviously because they play on TV so much, we saw them play some zone, so we knew they were going to try to mix it up. We knew for the most part against us they were going to play man-to-man and not have to switch. So I actually felt good about that, I thought we were going to see forty minutes of straight man-to-man so obviously we were doing enough to make them think we need to do some switching and then go to the zone as well. We prepared for that, but sometimes it's a lot different having my walk-on play zone and say that he's [DaJuan] Summers."
