Washington, D.C. - The Georgetown University baseball team defeated George Washington University on Tuesday afternoon at Shirley Povich Field, 10-4. Junior Jimmy Saris earned his first win of the season and freshman Sean Lamont homered twice to drive in three runs for the Hoyas.
Lamont delivered a solo shot in the fifth before crushing a ball to straight-away center for a two-run bomb in the seventh. The Texan now has six home runs in 16 games for the Blue and Gray and leads the team with 18 RBI.
Jimmy Saris earned the start and allowed three runs but picked up his first win of the season. Freshmen Dan Godefroi and Pablo Vinent combined to pitch three innings while sophomore Jack Bender struck out the side in order during the eighth.
The first few innings were frustrating for GU as they fell behind 2-0 and left eight runners on base through the third, including the bases loaded twice. However, Erick Fernandez hit his first collegiate home run, a two-run blast to tie the score in the third inning. Matt Iannetta would then double and after the Hoyas loaded the bases for a third-straight inning, Tommy Lee drove him home on a groundout to second base for a 3-2 lead.
With the sacks packed in the fourth, an Iannetta come-backer scored another Hoya run. This play was followed by a bases-loaded walk to Greg Pustizzi and a wild pitch to put GU ahead, 6-2.
Iannetta would come through again in the seventh as with a run-scoring single up the middle to put the Hoyas in double-digits for the sixth time this year.
The Hoyas will close out their eight-game home stand this Thursday, Friday and Saturday against BIG EAST foe Notre Dame.
