BETHESDA, Md. - The Georgetown University baseball team (7-10) struggled to keep BIG EAST Conference foe, Notre Dame (8-7), off the base paths, as the Fighting Irish scored runs in all but two innings, to defeat the Hoyas 25-1, in the first game of a three game series at Shirley Povich Field.
Sophomore Tim Adleman (Raleigh, N.C./Wakefield) took the loss, allowing nine runs on nine hits over 2.0 innings, as the Hoyas pitching staff allowed 33 base-runners overall.
The Fighting Irish broke a scoreless tie, exploding for nine runs in the top of the second inning, while bringing 12 batters to the plate. AJ Pollock and Evan Sharpley each had two-run singles to highlight Notre Dame's offensive outburst.
Notre Dame scored three runs each in the third and fourth innings. Sharpley's three-run home run in the top of the third inning was his third of the season.
In the bottom of the fourth GU got onto the scoreboard, as freshman Erick Fernandez (Hialeah, Fla./Hialeah) singled to drive in senior Matt Ianenetta (Providence, R.I./St. Raphael Academy[UNC]), making the score, 15-1.
The Hoyas' were unable to provide any more offense, as Notre Dame scored 10 more runs to defeat the blue and gray, 25-1.
Georgetown and Notre Dame will play the second of their three game series on Friday afternoon at 3 p.m. at Shirley Povich Field.
