Final Stats
Washington, D.C. - The Georgetown University baseball team lost a close, 4-3 contest to Holy Cross on Friday afternoon. The Hoyas will now play Rollins College in the championship game, tomorrow, Saturday, March 8 at 2:30 p.m.
The Hoyas were the first to score in the ballgame when they took a 1-0 lead in the second inning. Consecutive singles by Dan Capeless (Centerville, Mass./Boston College H.S.) and Erick Fernandez (Hialeah, Fla./Hialeah) were followed by a sacrifice bunt from junior Kelly Muir (South Pasadena, Calif./Loyola). Then, Greg Pustizzi (Medford, N.J./Bishop Eustace Prep) grounded out to second base and put GU on the board.
Georgetown pushed their lead to 2-0 in the third when Tommy Lee (Mahopac, N.Y./Mahopac) singled down the left-field line with two outs. Lamont followed with a double that was misplayed by the Holy Cross leftfielder, allowing Lee to score.
Holy Cross would tie the game at two apiece before the Blue and Gray took their final lead of the game in the fifth, courtesy of Sean Baumann's (Tampa, Fla./Freedom) second home run of the season. The solo shot nudged the Hoyas ahead, 3-2.
Erick Chandler (Somerset, N.J./Rutgers Prep) allowed two earned runs in five innings and reliever Dan Godefroi (Andover, Mass./Andover) finished the game with three innings of shutout, one-hit ball.
