Box Score
- The Georgetown University baseball team lost another close affair at home this afternoon, 5-3, to Rutgers. The Hoyas scored runs in the final two innings but could not overtake the Scarlet Knights.
Georgetown scored single runs in the eighth and ninth to keep things interesting, but was once again unable to snag the lead. Lamont smashed his third home run in two games, and tenth of the season, a solo shot to cut the deficit to 5-2. With the bases loaded and one out, freshman Billy Henig was rung up on strikes and sophomore Tommy Lee hit a fielder's choice to the shortstop, ending the rally.
Georgetown was able to grab their first lead of the series in the initial inning. With one out, senior Matt Iannetta singled to left and freshmen Erick Fernandez and Sean Lamont drew walks to load the bases. Senior Matt Harrigan was then plunked by Rutgers hurler Steve Holt and forced home Iannetta to give the Hoyas a 1-0 lead.
Senior Michael Gaggioli went eight innings for the Blue and Gray, allowing five runs on 11 hits and striking out four. Rutgers was able to score two runs in the fifth before knocking three across in the seventh and eighth off the tiring left-hander. Sophomore Cary Piligian pitched the ninth and struck out two batters to close it out for the Hoyas.
In the ninth, sophomore Tom Elliott doubled to the left-center gap to get things going and scored after successive groundouts from Iannetta and Fernandez.
Tomorrow's start time for the final game against Rutgers has been pushed back from noon to a 1 p.m. first pitch.
