Washington, D.C. - The Georgetown University baseball team swept the season series from the U.S. Naval Academy this afternoon at Shirley Povich Field, 6-2. Sophomore Cary Piligian earned his first collegiate win with three innings of one-hit ball for the Blue and Gray.
Trailing 2-0 in the sixth, freshman Sean Lamont got things going with a double down the leftfield line. After advancing to third on a wild pitch during an eventual walk to senior Matt Harrigan, the Texas native came home with the Hoyas first run on a double from freshman Erick Fernandez. With runners now on second and third, Navy made a pitching change as sophomore Dan Capeless stepped to the plate. The Georgetown designated hitter laced a single to right that tied the game at 2-2. With only one out and Fernandez now on third, a fielder's choice from freshman Dan Godefroi got the run home and gave the Hoyas a one-run lead.
Senior Erick Chandler took the mound for the Hoyas this afternoon and allowed two runs on five hits while striking out four during five innings pitched. Senior Daniel Kennedy pitched a scoreless ninth and struck out one Navy batter.
The Hoyas extended their lead in the seventh as sophomore Tommy Lee singled to start the frame. After two strikeouts, Lee stole second and both Lamont and Harrigan drew walks to load the bases. Fernandez stepped up and drove in two more runs with a single to right that gave the Hoyas a 5-2 cushion. During the next at-bat, Georgetown was able to execute a double-steal as Harrigan took home on an attempt to get Fernandez at second.
The Hoyas will now travel to Cincinnati, Ohio to take on the host Bearcats in a three-game series this weekend. The BIG EAST matchup's first game will be Friday afternoon at 6:30 p.m.
