Box Score

WASHINGTON, D.C. - The Georgetown University softball team (21-33) swept Coppin State, 12-0, 20-0, winning both games in five innings, as sophomores Jadiq Garcia (Zebulon, N.C./East Wake) and Samantha Peters (Suwanee, Ga./Collins Hill) combined for 12 hits on the day, while pitchers Jennifer Connell (Roswell, Ga./Roswell) and Melissa Conners (Wellington, Fla./Wellington) allowed just one hit apiece during play at Guy Mason Field on Tuesday.

Peters went 6-for-9, including three home runs, with five runs and 11 RBI's over the two games, while Garcia went 6-for-8, scoring six runs and driving in three during the course of the day.

In game one, sophomore Demetria Cipriano (Coral Springs, Fla./Coral Springs Charter) led four multi-hit Hoyas, with three hits, including her 19th double of the season. Peters stole two bases to go along with two hits, that included her first home run of the day and Sarah Kamenski (Mountain View, Calif./St. Francis) had two hits and two RBI's, while Garcia had two hits.

Connell turned in one of the finest performances of her career, tossing five one-hit shut-out innings, striking out 13 batters over 5.0 innings to the 14th win of the season.

The Hoyas took a 1-0 advantage after the second, expanded the lead to five runs after the third, then exploded for seven runs in the fourth inning to jump out to a 12-0 lead. Four Coppin State errors helped the Hoyas score seven of the 12 runs.

Nichae Alston took the loss for the Eagles, allowing 12 runs, five earned over 4.0 innings.

The Hoyas struck quickly putting two runs on the board in the bottom of the first inning.

GU would take advantage of three walks followed by a wild pitch to bring in their first run of the second inning. Garcia would follow with a single to drive in a run and Peters would hit her second home run of the day, a three-run shot, to give the Hoyas a sizeable 7-0 lead. Peters would homer again in the third inning, as the blue and gray would cruise to a 20-0 victory in five innings.

Juniors Christina Gallinari and Katherine Incantalupo each scored two runs, while freshmen Jillian Webb each had two hits in the Hoyas victory.

Conners earned the victory, allowing just one hit in 5.0 innings of shut out ball, striking out five.

The Hoyas return to the field on Saturday, May 3 against Marshall University for their final game of the season. The game will also be Senior Day as Hoyas seniors will be recognized prior to the game.
