WASHINGTON, D.C. - The Georgetown University football team continued its workouts through the third week of June, hitting the weight room at Yates Field House and going through conditioning work on the Multi-Sport Field several times.
Each week through the start of preseason camp, members of the Hoya football team will be sharing their thoughts on summer workouts and the coming season. Senior defensive back Chris Parker (Stone Mountain, Ga./Tucker) provides this week's update.
"As a senior, this is my fourth and final summer on the Hilltop. I have embraced it as best I can, striving to do what I can while I still remain here, but also working toward my future after graduation. In four summers of training, I have seen more than most. What I write here, I wish to be a tribute to my team and coaches as well as myself.
"This past week was a true testament to the men that are here working hard to turn this program around.
"During the summer, there are times when people can stop showing up to workouts consistently. They start to make excuses or settle for what they have already achieved. But the guys that are here aren't showing any signs of slowing down. This week was filled with challenges every day. And unlike in years past where we got to rest on Wednesday, we now go straight through every day, with no rest until the weekend.
"What I admired most this week was how guys were not just talking, but striving for perfection. Striving for perfection after a strenuous workout, at a time where most would do just enough to get the workout over and done with. To add to it, everyone came out on Saturday to do some extra, but necessary work. We have yet to participate in a seven-on-seven against another school, but the realization set in that we needed to go ahead and get to work however we could.
"In spite of some of us having to work jobs, such as quarterback Keerome Lawrence, we got some good work in on Saturday. We learned a few things about ourselves and each other. We had some great fun and we ended the week on a good note.
"As much as I wish everyone could be here, I know they can't. I know some more guys will be here in the weeks soon to come and others won't be here until camp in August. I can only hope that the guys who aren't here are working just as hard as the guys here. The guys here have begun to set a pace for those who will be joining us shortly. It is a pace that can really get this program rolling and to where it wants to be.
"We are not slowing down, we're only picking things up as we move closer to the start of the season. We aren't where we want to be, but we can get there and we aren't far off. We have enough guys on pace so when everyone else gets here, and we'll be a true force to be reckoned with come September."
