WASHINGTON, D.C. - Georgetown University Head Men's Lacrosse Coach Dave Urick announced that seniors Jake Samperton (Bethesda, Md./Landon) and Chris Taylor (Mercer Island, Wash./Mercer Island) have been named the team's captains for the 2009 season.
The Hoyas, coming off a 9-4 2008 season, are ranked No. 6 in the Inside Lacrosse Preseason poll.
"This is a great honor for both Jake and Chris," Urick said. "They were selected by their teammates and I think our players chose a tremendous pair of leaders. We've been fortunate to have some student-athletes who have helped make this program very successful and both Jake and Chris are among that group."
After appearing as an attackman his first two seasons, Samperton made a smooth transition to the midfield last year, where he was able to help guide the Hoyas. He appeared in 13 games and finished eighth on the team in scoring with five goals and five assists for 10 points. A hard worker with a great attitude, Samperton is a selfless player who will be looked up on to play a big role again this season.
Taylor will serve as a team captain for the second-straight season. Last year, he one of four players named captain, and the team's first junior captain since the 1999 season. A terrific athlete with an outstanding work ethic and attitude, Taylor is one of the best defensive midfielders in the country. He scored two goals and was sixth on the team with 25 ground balls last season. Taylor has also been an instrumental member of the Georgetown Hoya Dreams program, which pairs up student-athletes with children at the Georgetown University Hospital.
Georgetown opens the 2009 season on Saturday, Feb. 21 at Maryland.
