Final Stats
BALTIMORE, Md. - Freshman Charlotte Tierney (Rye, N.Y./Holy Child) scored her first collegiate goal in the first half to put the Georgetown University Field Hockey team (1-13) in a 1-1 tie with Towson University (4-9). The Tigers responded by scoring the next five goals to go on to defeat the Hoyas 6-2 on a cold, rainy evening at Stevenson U. Field at Towson University.
Kristen Volpe (Pennington, N.J./Hopewell Valley Central) scored her ninth goal of the season, ending Towson's run of five consecutive goals, but it was too little too late for the Hoyas.
Katie DeFilippo gave Towson a 1-0 lead, 1:54 into the match. It would be her first of three goals and her second career hat trick, with her first also coming against the Hoyas.
Tierney tied the score just under 12 minutes later, beating the goalkeeper on Danielle Filipponi's (Oak Hill, Va./Oakton) pass from the near side. From that point it was all Towson, as Christina Boarman would register three goals, during a 5-0 run, giving the Tigers an insurmountable 6-1 lead.
Volpe scored the Hoyas final goal just under the 46 minute mark, as the teams played scoreless the rest of the way for an eventual 6-2 Georgetown loss.
Freshman Clodagh Coghlan came on in the second half and stopped three shots, allowing just one goal in the loss.
The Hoyas return home to the William I Jacobs Recreational Complex on Friday afternoon at 3 p.m. when they take on BIG EAST rival Villanova. A shuttle picking up from in front of McDonough Arena will be available at 2:45 p.m. for people on campus interested in attending the match.
