WASHINGTON - The Georgetown University field hockey team (1-15, 1-3 BIG EAST) continues its season on Wednesday, October 21, taking on American University (7-6) at their shared home field, the William I Jacobs Recreational Complex on the campus of American University Washington DC at 3 p.m. The Hoyas are in their first season of playing home matches at American.
The Hoyas are coming off a 3-1 loss to Bucknell from last Sunday and a 5-0 loss to Villanova on Friday. Kimberly Keating scored Georgetown's lone goal against the Bison.
The Hoyas and Eagles will meet for the 24th time in program history, with the GU trailing the series 6-16-1. The Hoyas last victory over American came October 15, 2002, as Lauren Galbally and Jessica Quinn each scored goals, both assisted by Leeanne Rizzo in a 2-1 win.
Kristen Volpe currently leads GU in scoring, with 24 points (9 g, 6 a). Volpe is a two-time member of the BIG EAST Conference weekly honor roll, earning her first distinction on Aug. 31 after a hat-trick against Lock Haven and her second on Sept. 28 after helping Georgetown collect its first BIG EAST win in its program history. Volpe looks to become just the fourth Hoya field hockey player this decade to score ten or more goals in a season, joining Elena Elster (2000, 2001), Jessica Quinn (2002, 2003) and Katie Lacheman (2007).
Freshman goalkeeper Clodagh Coghlan has recorded 80 saves and leads the BIG EAST with 5.71 saves per match.
American is looking to build on its victory on Saturday against Bucknell. The Eagles shut out the Bison 3-0. Three players, Christine Fingerhutch, Savannah Graybill, and Melissa Casale, are tied with 16 points, and Fingerhutch and Graybill have each scored seven goals this season. Goalie Alyssa Poorman has recorded 36 saves.
After the game on Wednesday, the Hoyas will resume BIG EAST play next Saturday, October 24 at Providence at 1 p.m. before returning home to the William I Jacobs Recreational Complex to face BIG EAST foe Louisville on Saturday, October 31 at 10 a.m.
